More like voodoo magic!! It all adds to the fun though, not complaining too much at the mo as MTRs are on and ready for winter. Would rather be in the weird world of LR than Audi or Beemer. As long as only one breaks down at once!!

Smoke coming out of both ends...
Guys, have been following the thread for a while, my D4 puffs every now and then under kick down so will await the dealer TSB or add mine to the list when I go in for the service.
But... had some hint of smoke from front right of the grill after start up, only the once.
Is this linked to the same issue we have and down to some oil / fumes making it's way out of the air filter?
No repeat incident, no warning lights or messages and ran fine.
Any similar issues?

Smoke from the front will be your fuel burning heater - it will be from just in front of the nsf wheel - the wind will move it around. This smoke is normal.

Cheers, never noticed it before but the cold air may have highlighted it. Will keep an eye on the thread for more info on the wider issues of smoking D4sSweet

My engine stopped smoking, but now it’s stopped working
After the long-running issue of my D4 being prone to smoke (see posts above!), I was really pleased that the mods Land Rover carried out in late October had solved the problem. I’d had six weeks of happy smoke-free motoring!
But last Friday morning when I started up the engine on the driveway at 6am I noticed it was sounding very rough. I thought it strange as I’d driven 300 miles the previous day to Birmingham and back, and the engine had been very smooth. When I picked up some colleagues a few miles down the road they remarked that the car sounded like an old tractor, and was I really sure I didn’t want to go home and use the wife’s Punto before getting on the motorway.
I feigned confidence in my car and carried on, but three miles later (ironically as I happened to pass the LR Dealership in Coulsdon!) the engine started to sound really quite ill. There was no loss of power, but the sound effects were not healthy. 400 yards later the engine totally cut-out and we coasted to the kerb. I tried to press the Engine Start button but it was dead.
I called LR Assist and they were on the scene within about 20 minutes (I’ve called them out four times since owning the car and the service is impeccable – it’s just a shame I’ve needed to call). The technician confirmed the car needed to be recovered.
A frantic call to my Mum (who is local) ensued and she was on the scene quickly with her car for me to use – no time to wait for Enterprise when there’s a major business meeting and the clock is ticking! However, all credit to Land Rover and Enterprise, I asked for a 4x4 loan car and a Freelander was dropped off at my office later that day.
That afternoon the dealer also delivered some great news – the engine was dead, and my car needed a new one. Some may think that’s bad news, but I’ve been asking for a new engine for months due to the problems I’ve had and now I am getting one…
I am no technician, but I understand initial inspections by the dealer revealed small pieces of metal in the sump, broken bearings, and the torque converter / fly wheel are ‘shot’. So it’s £5,500 of new engine being authorised and ordered. Apparently when it arrives its 3 days labour to fit it (obviously all on warranty). And probably about two weeks for that whole process they tell me…
The car had only done 14k miles (mix of urban and motorway – never towing) and is 11 months old – but I really hope the new engine will transform it into the motor it’s supposed to be. In recent weeks it has been absolutely first class in the snow/ice, I don’t know how I ever lived without it. I just want it to become reliable.
Credit where credit is due – the Land Rover Customer Relationship dept. and the Service Manager at my dealership have been very proactive in keeping me informed. And at their instigation, they are currently working to replace the Freelander loan car with a D4 / RRS later this week. I didn’t ask for this, but it would be a welcome gesture if it happens – especially as with Xmas I have a sneaky feeling the projected two week lead time for getting my car back might be more like three weeks. We’ll see.
So, here’s to the new engine for the new year… It had just better not start smoking under acceleration…! (and before anyone asks, it will run in as per the book!)747_JK

Not a good thing to happen.
But like you I guage a busness not on whether something goes wrong but what they do when it does. Sounds like both LR and the dealer are making the effort to fix with the least inconvenience to you.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Been missing my D4 for nearly 3 weeks now. Was a chance of getting it back tomorrow with the new engine fitted, but the dealer has had to order additional parts (turbochargers) which have been discovered damaged during the engine carnage.
Have to say the dealer and LR Customer Services are continuing to be very proactive in updating me on progress with the car. Just looking forward to getting it back now. Currently driving an 09 RRS HSE from Enterprise, which LR sorted for me over Xmas.747_JK

Excessive Smoke
I have had the same problem with my car – now 16 months old and 30,000 miles. I think it is to do with driving style / conditions. If I do a lot of urban driving or moderate speed cruising then under heavy acceleration the car will smoke excessively and sometimes misfire. The smoke looks as if it contains oil (blueish) and the misfire indicates this as well.
Pulling away from a toll in France recently created a mini fog bank – everything behind me literally disappeared.
Reminds me a bit of a 007 car except they were designed to create a smokescreen whereas I don’t think this was on Land Rover’s list of must haves when they were designing the D4 !

Excessive smoke
Since a visit to the dealers for 30k service smoking has completely disappeared, engine is not as responsive and fuel consumption is slightly down so think a software mod might have fixed the fault

Had new turbos fitted to mine, smoke is no longer visible through the use of the mirrors but slight smoke can be observed with use of rear camera on occasions, no loss of poweror change in fuel consumption, had car back about three weeks and done about 1000 miles 700 plus towing large twin axle tin tent.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Been running mine for six weeks with the brand new engine (and many other driveline bits which were replaced after the failure), plus the updated-spec turbos and software upgrades which were officially released by LR as the fix for this smokey problem in Jan. Haven't seen a single puff of smoke so far. THANK YOU Land Rover!!!747_JK
