OK - I've just looked at Microcat and the speakers for the hi-line system are around 50% more than the base speakers - but still not that expensive. (24ish quid each compared to 15 quid)
The tweeters are also different so could be a cheap upgrade.
The thing that stood out most is that, in Microcat, the hi-line door speakers are labelled as "mid-range" whilst the base door speakers are labelled as "mid-range/bass". This makes sense as the hi-line system has a passive sub in the lower tailgate, but sounds as though the hi-line speakers won't actually provide much bass compared to the full-range speakers of the low-line....
Also, upgrading the rear door full-range speaker to the hi-line mid-range version means that you would have little treble - to install the hi-line rear door tweeters would mean changing the door cards and fitting a crossover. You would also lose bass definition...
I'm suddenly not so sure this would work as well as I thought it would 30 minutes ago.... 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I fitted DLS C6A (DLS-C6A) to a mid line 2006 SE - much improved clarity across the range.
I have to turn the volume up an extra click but definitely worth it.
Created an MDF spacer as others have done and fitted some Dynamat.

Sorry I thought this thread had died and forgot about the spacer. I'll get back later to see if I have it.
IMHO don't bother with upgrading to premium lr speakers. The stuff aftermarket is much better quality however do understand about fitting easy

Ok, let me take things a bit further, but first I would like to thank BBS Spy for all the info he has provided so far. I opted for the premium (Logic 7) speakers as I wanted to upgrade the whole system to premium .
Thus, for the front doors you have a tweeter, a mid range/surround and a bass speaker. For the time being I have only the tweeter & bass fitted. The Logic 7 speakers are better quality and much heavier with a larger magnet. Of course you have to take off the door card, but otherwise it is a straight fit (unscrew the old ones, screw in the new ones - same connectors are used). Cost of the speakers is abt 20 quid for each tweeter and abt 31 quid for each bass (got them from TLO (The Large One) at a better price).
Both the Hi-line and Premium systems use a tweeter and a mid range/bass speaker (Microcat quotes it as bass) in the rear doors. Again you have to take off the rear door card and of course the base model does not have the tweeter grille. Now comes the interesting part . In the premium system, the rear D-pillar trim contains a speaker grille and a mid range speaker which is included in the trim when you order it! (thanks BBS Spy). Not only is the grille the right size for both the rear and front door cards, it also has the right curvature to fit on the door card! So I unscrewed the speaker (to use it in the front door card at a later time and used a soldering iron to slowly separate the speaker grille from the ring securing it to the D-pillar trim. At first I thought that the base door card would have ready the fitting for the tweeter (it's a bayonette type) but I was wrong . So I improvised and cut a hole in the door card to fit the tweeter using a circular saw (abt 43 mm dia) and secured it with a tie wrap and glued it with a hot glue gun, then cut the whole "ring" containing the tweeter (the grille outline is scribed on the inside of the door card), fitted the grille (had to take off the light padding on its back to make fit flush on the door card) and glued the "ring to it. I then splided the tweeter connector to the existing cabling to the mid range/bass speaker (the tweeter cabling has the crossover integrated in it).
Price of the D-pillar trim is abt 30 quid each.
Despite the fact that the front door is presently missing the mid range speaker the sound coming out is a lot crisper, clear and fuller. It also has a good bass. The rear door speakers sound even better. And yes you have to turn the headunit volume just one click up compared with the old system but the sound is great. Now I can enjoy listening to the music in the car.
As for upgrading to the full premium system I have to wait until the economic situation in Greece improves .
Hope I have not tired you a lot. I will also try to post a few pictures I have taken.
