Hi Guys,
does anyone know if there is a an upgrade speaker range available for a base audio set up without having to make MDF spacers?
I am looking for a straight swap upgrade.
Anybody upgraded without any hassle?
Cheers

You can use the configurator at www.crutchfield.com to get the details specific to the LR3.
Short answer: They're a non-standard (possibly metric?) size and 6.5" is the largest that will fit.

Just measured my old rears. four fixings at 180mm. Sorry don't have fronts to measure.
I think tou will need to make an adaptoor plate because the speaker housing raises the speaker by about 30mm so if you fit diect it will foul on the window. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I'll have a dig but pretty sure I traced the template I made so I can put up a PDF. It's really simples to make:
get some 18mm mdf and a decent jigsaw
remove an old lr speaker
cut through all the plastic and rip the cone out
draw around what's left
mark the mounting holes
I also countersunk the mounting holes so could use the existing lr screws to fix them back on. Also remember to make a channel/hole to get the speaker wire out as with most the connections are likely to be in the hole. I chopped the lr plug off and used some of the speaker supplied cable to extend it to reach, then soldered and heatshrunk the join
tweeters were fairly easy. Pulled the new ones out of their case then modified them to fit in the lr door tweeter hole and clip cover and secured with hot glue. Then chopped the end of the lr tweeter and transplanted with solder and heatshrink onto the new one.
Yes you could do it so you can put the lr ones back in but they really are and for the cost of speakers is it worth it?
I'll try and find the template and post back

Pretty much exactly what I did. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

And how did you guys find the sound after the installation of after-market speakers?
Did it improve much? Bass, treble, clarity?
Is it worth considering installing an amp, or does the base head unit deliver enough power to make them "sing"?

easy very easy
need small flat screwdriver to lift the door handle (release it from underneath) as there are two screws hidden under it holding the card
remove other screws around the card and pull to release it from the clips
that is about it
send me you email I got it with pics

Got a few days off work next month and considering changing all the door speakers on my base model, anyone changed just the speakers and kept the base head unit, was it worth it??

I changed the door speakers to the LR premium ones. Straight fit and great sound improvement while still using the base unit.

Interesting idea....
I know that the Logic 7 has (ignoring the tweeters) two speakers in each front door - one mid-range and one bass.
I also know that the base and hi-line systems both have a single combined mid/bass speaker, but I didn't know that they were physically different parts. Makes sense I suppose.
Did you buy them new? Cost?
Are they a direct replacement with no other messing around? I mean, remove door panel, remove old speakers, still new ones in using the original cables, mounting points, screws etc and done?
What is the main difference you notice? Louder, more clarity, more bass??
What about the tweeters? Did you also change those over?
Sorry for the questions, but you've got me interested
