Garmin ecoRoute HD

The unit plugs into the ECU connector and then connects via Bluetooth to a Garmin gps. Cost less than $180 AUD, has a graphical readout of various engine functions and also the ability to read and reset fault codes.
I have seen a youtube video of the system and the fault codes where converted into a useable text form. As the test car was a Ford, I am wondering if it would work on a D3.
If anyone has one or seen one in use with a D3 and wish to share their opinions with me I would be grateful.

I don't have much to contribute but was re-igniting this thread to see if there are any updates from people who have used this in a D3?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NceYDK3XZJ4

Like others I am more interested in the engine/fuel readings than any error codes.

Does anyone know where the OBD port is on a TDV6 D3?

ODB port is by your knees under the steering wheel. Someone on here has installed one just can't remember who. Sure they will be along soon.

Thanks All - my mind's made up! (I need a new GPS unit and was weighing up options)

Gazellio do you have any reception problems where your GPS is mounted or have you hooked up an external receiver? I probably wouldn't mount my permanently, but it's always good to have the option.

I like the look of the install but could you tell me how the connector to the ecu plug works. Perhaps a photo? As the plug is down under the steering wheel I'm a bit worried it will stick out a lot and be in danger of getting knocked.

Thanks

Gazellio,

Wife wants TV in the car and I want a faultcode reader, this looks perfect. What model Garmin nuvi is this, is it the 1490TV? I assume the ecoroute HD is an additional adaptor, is this wired into the satnav or is it Bluetooth?

If it is the 1490TV I couldnt see anything about the ecoroute HD on Garmin's website being compatible for this model or perhaps I'm being blind.

Is the fault code part as good as the Faultmate?

RichardB - not knowing anything about this but I'd assume the socket under the the steering wheel may be able to be removed and pulled back behind the dashboard. Only a guess though.

Yes, think I found Gazellio's answer at the end of the other thread. I think this is exactly what he has done.

I'm a bit reluctant to do that as really want the car to stay in standard form for when it goes into the stealer and they do tend to use the plug Exclamation

1490TV is the only garmin with TV. Was thinking about this myself. It's amazingly hard to work out garmin's range as they seem to mix and match features. No one model does everything it seems.

I know, my old Tomtom stopped picking up satellites intermittently which as this is a fairly important part of a satnav working came to be pretty annoying. So replaced it last year for one I thought gave the same features. Well, yes and no. Some of the good bits from my old one arent there any more. I guess that's progress for you, and trying to keep costs down and being competetive.

About the socket bit, assuming the car's reliable to only go into the garage once a year for the service then perhaps the socket could be temporarily moved back to its original position? Velcro, sticky pads, a hinge? Laughing

My Garmin unIt is permanently wired behind the dash but is secured using part of the window bracket without the suckers as it fits exactly into the central nav area but can be removed and used in other cars using the mini usb lead and cigar lighter!
The reception is perfect at all times and it looks and feels like a proper factory unit turning on and off with the ignition.
With the eco route lead plumbed in behind panel you can access engine diagnostics and readouts as well as mpg, live economy driving style and loads more as well as great sat nav.

Its easy to undo the panel and put the OBD socket back in place.

Highly recommended set up.
