In a pinch- Reduced Engine Power

Hello all-

In a bit of a pinch here- 300 miles away from any dealer in CA with a crippled Rover. 2006 LR3 V6 with 73,000 miles. It's a bit of a story. Drove from Reno, NV to Lone Pine, CA for some offroading yesterday, spent today doing some pretty gnarly roads in the mountains.

Symptoms/Story:
Check engine light was on for a while, but got that fixed two weeks ago specifically for this trip. However, just our luck, check engine light was back on yesterday on the highway. Took off this morning, check engine light on, and did ~30 miles of offroad driving, everything fine. In the afternoon, we headed for our next destination, refueling along the way (questionable remote gas station, though...).

About 20 miles after gassing up, 6 miles up a steep, rocky canyon, the idle went bonkers when we paused the car on relatively flat ground. Really low, grumbling idle that stalled as soon as we tried to give it some gas. Fault popped up: Reduced Engine Performance. Turned the car on and off, fault cleared, idled okay when we gave it a lot of gas. We drove uphill another .5 miles before it stalled again. Decided to turn around and get out before we had a Rover stuck up in the desert mountains. Back on the highway, very noticeable loss of power. Took forever to accelerate and going up a highway grade, we could only hold 20 mph, 2nd gear, gas pedal floored.

So, now, we made it to (a bit of) civilization with internet, but have a Rover that can only go 20mph up any little hill (its great on the downhills/flats, can hold 60mph) faced with either a slow hilly drive home to Reno or one helluva tow to the nearest dealer (LA, Reno, or Sacramento). Haven't seen the fault message since it cleared on the first stall.

Questions:
1. Is driving this thing home, limping up hills, going to cause permanent damage?
2. Could it be anything fixable without computer diagnostics (i.e. clogged fuel filter)? The fill up at a remote gas station is lurking in the back of my mind...

Any help would be appreciated. We're going to limp another 50 miles to a more sizeable town where we can check in again. Going to do some frantic research for now though.

Thanks in advance.
Nathan

One more thing

One more thing- exhaust smelled very rich at the first stall out. Didn't notice it as much later. And we've been experiencing notably lower MPG recently.
