Power Steering 'notchy'

Hi there, looking for some advice about the power steering.

Very recently and allof a sudden, the steering has become 'notchy'. as it the power steering seems to come and go.
Its still working and not very noticable at speed, but you need two hand to turn the steering wheel, and the wheels done 'self centre' any more. You need to physically steer it back to straight.

There is a short thread on here which talks briefly about this but doesnt contain much information except that its a common fault?

Anyone have experience of this and ideas whats wrong?

Cheers

Simon

You should check the power steering fluid first.

Checkthe universal joint in the steering column. A bit of wd40 or spray grease will ease it, but is likely to need replacing at some point soon.

Bodsy beat me to it!

U/J's on the lower steering shaft seize up, giving the same symptoms you describe. Good news is that its not too expensive or difficult to replace Thumbs Up

Simon, I'd go with Bodsy and Disco Mikey here too.

I had the same effect as you describe on mine recently, I got underneath and squirted oil all over the lower UJ while an assistant turned the steering wheel and it's been fine ever since.

I used engine oil from an oilcan though rather than WD40 as I find that although it takes longer to penetrate, it tends to stay around for longer without washing off.

I know I'm only putting off the inevitable - but every little helps Thumbs Up

Hi Simon,
I have the very same thing going on with my 55 reg and had it checked out at dealer. Was told it will need a new lower steering shaft in time but no urgent at the moment. I assume its the joint as everyone else is mentioning, Sounds more common than I had thought. Going to get it done sometime in near future.
Cheers,
Keith.

Correct as Bodsy sais
a few squirts of WD40 with some steering input in between works a treat - this freaked me out when it first happened but the Forum was quick to identify the problem and the 'fix' It wasn't too expensive to replace
