RR home screen on Disco 3
My experience when changing over to the RR home screen in my 56 plate Disco 3 HSE.
Problems so far;
1/ Brightness;
Definitely a problem particularly when in Satnav. (Seems to start of OK but at some point goes dim. Have turned up brightness control).
2/ Phone screen;
Works quite well but no contact directory (even though updated Blue Tooth Module From Wiggs has been fitted).
3/ If I select CD from Audio Video, CD screen comes up. If I attempt to change CD, sound goes off. Worse than that volume control is lost even if I go back to the radio controls. (The only way I can regain volume control is to turn off ignition and let vehicle go to sleep).
4/ On road info;
The only thing that seems to work here is the Stop watch!
5/ 4X4 Info;
I think most of the info is there, although the Terrain Response definitely isn't!
There may be other issues, but this is what I'm aware of so far.

Have I broken it?
Having gone into the diagnostics and checked the camera works with the Fakra input and test screen, I did the RR mod as far as cutting the reqd cable. Seemed to work ok with the RR screen showing and a Satnav a bit dimmer but adjustable.
While playing with the 2 camera feeds I want to use, I noted that the screen was getting almost black. Ok so try to adjust the brightness... no joy... almost guessing where the touch screen buttons were.
Ok turn off let it sleep turn on...... NO RADIO/SATNAV/SETTINGS AT ALL as in the radio wont turn on!!!
I'm in the process of trying a hard reset .... :fingercrossedsmilie:

Trying the wire cutting technique to change sat nav display
My Denso connection looks different from those already posted - is this fix still do-able does anyone know ?

That's because your looking at the wrong part you need to take the black plastic bezel off the front of the screen 4 small screws on the side then you will see the wire you need to cut Discovery 3 se gone

teen tiny little plug found - very small wire cut ( not got a switch small enough for it )
Rebooted - and voila ! it only bloody works doesn't it

its a pity that no one has yet found a electronic fix for this so the phone book and everything else works as the range rover does Discovery 3 se gone

Does anyone have access to a FFRR Denso display to see how the ambient light sensor is wired in?
It would be nice to solve the brightness issue without having to solder a diode directly to the PCB. I'm hesitant to do this which appears to make the screen fully bright all the times (including at night). Can anyone who's done this mod (diode to the circuit board) comment on the brightness at night?
I've been trying to source a Range Rover screen locally, but they are _extremely_ rare in Canada.

I carried out this modification over the weekend. Took about 30 mins. As already highlighted functionality is frustratingly limited and not worth the bother to be honest. I certainly wouldn't go to the length of soldering in diodes to get the brightness levels up. Went back to the original mode after a quick drive out in her.

Well gentlemen, I have managed to devise a more automated and permanent solution
to the brightness issue which does away with any soldering on the touchscreen
mainboard and I would like to share it with you all
First of all however, I must thank Wiggs for the guidance he has given early in this
thread about the wiring necessary to make use of a light sensor to solve the
brightness problem. This confirmed my assumption that the light sensor used by
the FFRR to control the brightness of the screen is a relatively simple circuit
based on the principle of a voltage divider and a photoresistive sensor (you may
have noticed that on the diagnostic screen in the Disco mode the ambient light
sensor voltage remains null at all times while in the FFRR mode it stays more or
less constant at 0.24V). Google searching showed that the light sensor in the
FFRR display is connected to the same plug that is used for the hard buttons of the
Disco3 touchscreen.
To cut a long story short this is how it can be done.
I used a 20-50KΩ photoresistive sensor purchased from an electronics shop and a
43KΩ resistor (if I remember well). The sensor/resistance circuit has to be
connected to 3 positions on the touchscreen mainboard, namely ambient light
voltage in (Vin), ambient light (voltage) out (Vout) and of course ground as shown
in the picture below:

Thanks to Wiggs again and his "treasure" gallery it was easy to locate the two wires
and using my multimeter I found which is the Vin (5 volts) and the Vout - see photo
below:

I bought the 2 red cables you see in the previous photos with already crimped
terminals from RS Components (they fit pretty well) - see link below
and I used the connector from an old laptop bios backup battery for ground (using
my multimeter I found that the two pins on the bottom side (pins 14 &15) of
the second 15-pin socket on the touchscreen mainboard are ground (this socket
takes the signals from the LH hard buttons board of the FFRR display))
This is how the completed circuit looks like when ready to fit the touchscreen back
in place.

I positioned the sensor on the vertical side of the centre console (see photo below)
since it is also positioned vertically on the FFRR display.

Below are screens during day and night with headlights on or not (note how the
ambient light sensor voltage increases when during daytime).

Now all I need to do is to make the sensor face blend better to the centre console
trim and move on to installing the telephone module.
