I don't think you can borrow an IID to do this, without buying a licence too.

By default, yes, if non-pro version. Obviously one can add more than one vehicle to an IID module (costs something, you’ll find the price on their web page).
You can scan codes without a vehicle specific license. You need one if you want to edit CCF or upgrade firmware. There is a good feature matrix on GAP’s home page.
That being said, having an IID is very useful as a D3/D4 owner.

Having once trailed through this 30+ page thread I'm still a bit unclear on how worthwhile this mod is and what is the best procedure. Any chance someone could condense the thread down into a how to for the wiki page please?

Hello i did complete it basicaly for 2 things. First - reverse camera great thing to have. Second, the phone on the touch screen. Cool thing for me. Having possibility of easy switch between 2 modes its really usefull.
All the activations made by SDD
BIG thank you to all who made this mode so easy and usefull (light sensor)

Done this great mod! Thanks to all people who made it possible!
The only thing I encounter is that the reverse camera switches to black screen (with warning) when I put in reverse gear….when I hit the brake, the camera screen shows up Did I connect to the wrong wire??

Yes mate, probally you take +12V for you camera in the brake lights
