I got that too for the fist couple of thousand. I can get over 30 on a run if I'm careful out and about around 27-28 on average and not thinking about economy. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

hi all
well i have been on a 150 miles round trip toaday 144 miles of it where either duel carriagway or motorway and guess what I NEVER GOT MORE THAN 23 MPG no matter how hard i tried 56mph 60 mph 65mph 70 mph nothing seemed to improve it kept resetting the average to check then left it alone. i cannot beleave this as i said it is turbochipped so i expected that to improve it (not that i am slagging turbochip off), god knows what it would be like as standard. i honestly cannot beleave this i tried not to go above 2000 rpm but still the same.
what should i do i know people say if you spend nearly 40k on a car then you should be able to afford the fuel but thats not the point its spoiling my dream car

Shawn, there is a very skilled technique to economy driving. I actually do not drive slowly as some of the guys know, but I do drive very senstively and only mainly watch the RPM. Often it is best to stay in say 5th gear at 50 MPH as the economy is greater than 6th and that could be for miles and miles. I will avoid TC as it has little to do with chipping when saving fuel.
If anyone is interested, I could consider running a course on economy driving sometime if it helps.
Just for info, I think Slimer and I returned about 24 mpg off road in Wales in low ratio and many minor roads etc including the odd dash after the group.

Yup, think mine was just under 24MPG in the end. On the way back when we were cruising through Wales at around 50MPH I got it up to 37.4MPG! This dropped of course when we hit the M54 and opened it up a bit but it just shows you what can be achieved. Over the entire 200 mile run from Wales to home I averaged 33.2 MPG and I was cruising at dead on 70MPH for most of the motorway leg (M54/M6/M42/M40/M25) The End

Should also add this was running on the Cooper STTs which definitely don't do anything to help fuel economy! The End

i appreciate your comments but i know all about economy driving having driven 38 ton trucks all over europe for 10 years i know about green band driving. i have tried staying in 5th gear and using the maual shift option but no matter how hard i try it will not get any better.
i wish i could swap with you for a week and see what you think, i will speak to the dealer again next week and be a bit firmer because i think there is a fault with the car.

Shawn, you would not want to swap at this point, mine is rejected. Fuel economy is good and always has been, but then I run my cars in for 1000 miles anyway. One of my companies are specialists where I earn my living by teaching truck drivers economy driving around the world with the fuel and gas companies (or my team do now, I have retired a bit). The green band in the truck is one thing and predominantly for suggested gear change revs. Driving and keeping in the band is then the follow up. Don't forget if you buy a Scania for instance (or any truck) the manufacturer will look at their chart and suggest a gearbox and settings for the most prominent type of work and area the truck will be in.
Driving a D3 is slightly different as the engine mapping takes over more so than in a truck. Light throttle use in the D3 is not necessarily the answer to economy anymore than heavy throttle use. With the D3 to gain some sort of economy you need to get the car to the speed you intend to achieve reasonably quickly, from there on it is steady and controlled gas moderation. Cruising revs are found to be best around 1900 to 2300. If you find that you are cruising and the revs are out of that range, your fuel econ will suffer. For instance 65 mph on a motorway in 6th gear, may not be economical, but 5th would.

In fact to back up BN's comment... LR state in their lit that the TDV6 has excellent continuous speed fuel economy... so cruising at the right revs will enhance economy.

i understand what you are saying and totally agree with you, whilst i may not be perfect at getting it dead right surely i cannot be so far away that i get on average 19.5 mpg when others are getting so much more.

One thing I didn't ask or may have missed, is your car an auto?
Re rejection, too many faults in a short space of time. The car should have covered around 30 to 40K by now, but has only covered 7K, no good for me.
Too many trips to the dealer wasting my time, over 1300 miles to and from the dealer alone.
Too many days lost getting car repaired, about 10 of my working days lost in total. Not the dealers fault, just a poor quality control in the factory on assembly. Waiting final reply from LR who have actually endorsed the rejection according to my dealer on Friday. The car is fine at the moment, but just worried about using it, which is crazy.

Shawns car is an Auto Brian, it says in his sig!
My auto does a long term average of 25.1 mpg. This was averaged over 4000 miles.
It was reset as I left the dealers to traval to Wales for our weekend. Brian you asked me several times during the weekend, but I forget what it read now. I remember yours was always better than mine.
I reset it again on Friday to coincide with the new tyres. Currently done about 75 miles in general driving this weekend. The average is now showing 24.2 I have a lot of motorway driving to do on Monday/Tuesday, then I am off to Shropshire for Wednesday/Thursday and into town on Friday. This time next week I will let you know whether the Michelin Synchrones add the claimed 3 - 4 mpg. They are certainly a lot smoother than the Wranglers.

In that case Shawn is not far off the mark really. It will be interesting re your harder compound tyres, because they must have less rolling resistance and the ability to save on both fuel and the tyres. Bad weather is the test as well later maybe.

i have decided, i am going to give it 1000 miles (3000 total) to improve otherwise the dealer is going to wish he had never met me 19.5mpg driving carefully just is not good enough and thats that.

Shawn, my auto Hse with 7000m is getting 19.5 mpg in mainly town driving I must admit that the urge to press on does get the better of me sometimes although I did recently get about 29 mpg on a long fast run.
I am interested in reports that the new 06 model seems to be getting better fuel figures,whats all that about ??.
I an also considering the turbochip upgrade and am interested to hear how it affects day to day driving as opposed to just bhp figures, I'm surprised to hear its made little difference to Shawns fuel figures.
