Apologies, a bit of a thread resurrection, but am just checking the use of the EPB.
Having read of issues for D3 owners, I've not used it in my D4 since having it this last 2 weeks.
However, I've been used to knocking previous DSG equipped cars into N and using the handbrake at traffic lights, to avoid blinding cars behind me.
Is the sticking EPB not an issue to concern me on the D4, I'll be relieved if it is more reliable on this model.
Thanks
Matt

get the HB to auto come on at ignition switch off (my D3 has this)...which means it is well used...on a D3 has to be programmed - maybe a D4 it can be set up on driver controls
when you are at a stop in traffic in "D" on the handbrake doesn't deploy (or my D3 doesnt)..you still have to hold the car (on the footbrake) to stop it creeping forwards in "D" (or maybe the D4 is different ?)...I realise this may not be the "proper" way & it may infuriate those behind you with you brake lights.
Having the Hand Brake deploy every time you switch off to me means its well used..& maybe stays good..time will tell & I will know at my next mid service brake check out.
On a recent DSG system..quite different you have auto HB on when ignition switched "off" (if you want it)
The auto hold comes on (if you want & select it) when you come to a halt by deceleration & brake - if the Bluemotion engine stop is on or off it will "hold" on the flat & on inclines...until you press the go pedal.
The big advantage is the car doesn't creep forwards & you dont have to keep your foot planted on the brake.
In the ACC (adaptive cruise) it will when set:
- control speed & distance to vehicle ahead - the the set speed in 5mph increments
- slow down & keep the distance to the vehicle in front of you..right up to it stopping
- do stop - start motion "by itself" in stop start traffic.
- the same system will "do" emergency braking & seat belt tension if some one in front cuts in or stops quickly
- If you open the driver door the systems goes into safe mode & stops the engine - handbrake on.
I havent driven anything that new from J/LR that has stop start / ACC systems so cant make the comparison...but to me the VW group system fitted to DSG vehicle is very very good. DSG is a very good gearbox fast & enjoyable to drive & always seems to do the right thing...to me far better than the ZF's fitted to LR & Jag. Maybe its because its two clutch as opposed to torque converter
One thing it does do is have the parking / shunting speed feature...with auto hold off & the car in "D" or "R" engine running take you foot off the brake the car will move at about 3mph & all you have to do to control it is foot brake on or off as opposed to juggling accelerator brake. Means parking or monoevering in a tight spot is very controlled. It also allows you to get off slippy snowy surfaces..if you have decent tyre tread. BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

With stop/start engine can't put into N and shut down as have to have foot on brake pedal or engine starts as soon as you lift off?
I never used mine on D3 and early D4 but they are auto-apply now?
Re; consequences of a rear end shunt and 'only relying' on P with consequential damage to the gearbox IMO if a shunt un the rear end was enough to shove the car forward then a) it would still be and b) whether the gearbox worked would be least of your worries

Always used mine in both D3 & 4 - both Auto's so didnt self apply
My D4 failed when I was on holiday in the lakes - therefore not a huge amount of flat parking and no way was I going to park a 2.7 ton car on a hill just in Park so I carried a big rock around as a chock until I got it home and fixed

I rarely use the parking brake for parking. But I have been using it whilst at traffic lights. i leave it in gear and just use the EPB whilst waiting. It works really well. Previous cars

Use mine every time, but I think that comes from moving over from the manual
I hate the way the pawl seems to catch when you move it out of park on a hill if you don't use the EPB
I also always put it in neutral and apply the EPB ,release the foot brake to allow the slack to be taken up by the EPB and then put it in Park........ but then, I'm just fussy

CDS - snap -everytime - I hate that feeling of putting into Park and then use EPB, to feel the car sit back on the Park pawl, so stop, footbrake, neutral, EPB, relase foot brake, park - pedants unite!

That is the exact way it should be done by the book.
Handbrake applied BEFORE locking the gearbox in park
Yes I did read the manual

I use my EPB all the time, and would never consider parking on a hill relying only on the gearbox pawl

The "E" in EPB stands for "Emergency" (doesn't it?). Therefore, I understood that it was there not just for parking but could be used in case of a brake failure. So, what would happen if you engaged it whilst the car was moving? It doesn't have a variable operation level as with old manual parking brakes, it's either on or off. Therefore, I can only assume that if you used this in "anger", the wheels would lock solid and probably do massive damage to the transmission.
