I was in ASDA yesterday and Halloween treats were on the list ... but the shelves were being cleared to put the Christmas stuff out..

I know what you mean, but I suppose it's no different going to a hotel and them photocopying your passport.
But you can at least ask them for it back when you leave & (hopefully) the details are not on a server somewhere else in the world.
I haven't even seen the "offending" advert but who the heck thought they had to apologise?

Found a promising place, booked up, went to pay by CC & then had to verify myself. Fair enough, but they want a scan of my Passport, Driving Licence or "Government ID".
Being the victimn of identity theft some years ago I am more than reluctant to let anyone have the sort of data that's on those documents. My name & address are on public record so all a scammer needs is a little more data.
Air BnB appears to be a US owned company, with offices round the world - they could have ntheir databases anywhere.
ATM I'm "conversing" with Air BnB via messaging but like many companies thesedays you simply cannot find an email address.
I appreciate that ID is important to hosts but there are limits.
Very common in Italy and Spain. Usually linked to paying local city taxes, etc. In theory it means they are 'doing it properly' and not themselves dodging the city tax by letting a place on the side. I have had similar concerns but if you look up the company used they are usually quite big names in providing secure identification, payments, etc.
If you don't do the process you often won't complete 'check in' on the property so won't get access to key codes/lock-boxes, etc.

Discussing it with SWMBO, after I posted, that was the only "logical" thing I could come up with.
Given the ad was probably conceived/filmed months ago, it's remarkably unlikely that M&S had any political point in mind here..

Filmed in the summer well before the terrible events in Israel/Gaza started.
Don't see the need to apologise, frankly.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

My wife does all the photo shoots for the Christmas products from May to beginning of September. Its really weird going into the studio seeing Christmas trees and decorations etc on a hot sunny day in July. Messes with my head! New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Well theres two coyntries I have no intention of visiting.
CC is good enough for the likes of Travelodge/Premier inn so it should be good enough for a company that has no "bricks & morter" assests.
Why do ABnB need my driver number & what vehicles I am qualified to drive ?
They are still playing ping-pong messages with me but I'm convinced it's some form of AI that does not work very well.
I'll stick to what I know & the ABnB hosts will lose out.

You can then rule out staying in hotels in most of Europe, the US, Japan, China, South Africa, Switzerland, the Caribbean and god knows where else I travel to that asks for ID or a passport.
I've never had any issues other than having my Amex cloned a few times. No major issue, just part of the rich tapestry of travelling and easily resolved.New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

I don't have an issue anywhere except with AirBnB which is my point.
There AI for messaging is still at the Adam & Eve stage.

But, in my frequent experiences, it's nothing to do with Airbnb, it's the host that has decided to do some 3rd party 'management' as they very often are no where near the property you are letting.
The secure ID means they can list with local police, a legal requirement in many places, and often the same company controls a 'keysafe' at the property with automated code. As I said before; don't authenticate and you don't get a keycode for entry.
I have asked if they are local and they'll sometimes meet & greet anyway and you prove ID (that they, a person you have never met and will likely never do again, takes a photo of your passport....), pay your local city taxes due and get handed the keys.
Your choice I suppose, but that's how it often works, same with booking.com, etc. at times

The thing is I can validate my ID without the driver/passport number.
I fully understand the need for ID - but why do AirBnB want those numbers ? No-one else does.
Some hotels copy your documents but I cover the numbers.
We are constantly being told to be careful with our data - I'm just very careful with mine.
In the event of a serious issue the authorities have more than enough to trace me without the document numbers.
