It makes sense that the D5 would be based on the FFRR/RRS2 platform and parts; remember that there is a heritage of doing just this and it's a sensible policy. Hopefully the D5 will benefit from the beta testing being done by RRS2 owners...Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I could have afforded it but for the cost of running the current one I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
Think along the same lines as RRS2. It's based on the same floor pan, same power train, same suspension etc, but a bit more family orientated
You don't have to.......I don't read "everything" either...
However..
If the Disco replacement is based on the RRS 2 floor pan which it will be stretched a bit.....(will be interesting to see the wheelbase & total length figures) & it ends up significantly smaller inside....the plot has been lost....totally.
What I fundamentally don't agree with is some marketing department telling me what I NEED
I know quite well what I WANT an incremental update with improvements as listed above...that's affordable....not a stratospheric price hike
No gimmicks
No gizmos
What LR need to do is differentiate thier products....they sell me what I & everybody else have to HAVE...
Like it or lump it....
I might even buy a D4...BREXIT - done properly.

Bruce, this is certainly one matter where I agree with most/all of what you've said.

Hopefully we will get that in the defender replacement. Whenever thatmay be
Yep, fingers crossed (though it's not going to affect me for a while yet), but it would have to be more acceptable as an all-round vehicle (fuel economy, comfort, long distance suitability etc.). The D3/4 serves a very happy medium.
Sadly, if the D5 doesn't suit many of "us", I can't see that a replacement for the Defner will be fully able to provide for our needs and the existing full off-road/utility market in one vehicle, so will we see two new "Defenders" perhaps (new "Defender" range even), or are some of us going to be ditched, I wonder... I hope (expect) the former, but I wouldn't put is past the LR of today to completely snub the "lower" end of the market. I have been anticipating the possibility of a Defender range, in particular since the DS was announced, which would be welcome, but I fear it's too many vehicles. I expect that the D5 and the "Defender" will be more lifestyle 4x4 than real life 4x4, sadly. Certainly the stuff in the Disco concept shown last year would suggest that they are targeting people who have no real expectation of getting it muddy. I'd love to think that the D5 will be just a modernised D4 but I fear it will be very, very different.
I hope the Defender will be "all day, everyday" comfortable, unlike the outgoing one, as well as utilitarian in ability just like the outgoing one. I could see myself in one then. Otherwise it'll possibly be a late D4 to replace the RRS.
Perhaps then keep the RRS as a laning / pay&play thing. Just to be different, really. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Having seen the D5, I'd like to think that would be more "lifestyle" and upmarket, and the new Defender will take the place of the D3/D4 workhorse My D3 Build Thread

From our perspective, I hope so, but I would also feel very sad if that means the full capabilities of the Defender are completely lost. The thing is can they keep the full capabilities of the current Defender, build it to comply with Euro and US regs and make it affordable(ish)In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
Yes, but that level of ability can never be 100% conducive to the comfort and day to day practicailty requirements we're after - things like basic dimentions, ground clearance, weight, wheel size etc. all play an important part in both vehicles, but in different ways.
