The wood in the foreground on the trailer looks mighty 'complex'.
What is it, please - and how will you split it?

Nothing complex, just rounds and limbs roughly piled up, my twin blade hydraulic splitter will sort it Very Happy

Not long invested in a splitter, essentially a 8t Jack, cuts through all those twisted bits of logs with ease Thumbs Up

MANY thanks for that info, Beanie.
Your twin blade hydraulic splitter sounds MOST impressive, and more to the point, efficient.
I'll look in your Gallery for pix of it.

Thanx for that one, Iguana - it's the 'twisted' bits that I find V diff. with my maul.
I understand that to 'rip' with a chainsaw one needs not the usual ~30 degs angle on the teeth, but around 10 degs?
Anyone got any experience with this, please?

AAA Question

It's how you use a chainsaw. Without the wedges the saw would bind in the cut. There are other methods but using wedges is the most efficient and kind to your saw. Most use plastic wedges these days to avoid any chance of metal vs chain, but metal wedges still have their uses - in my case as a rescue method to get my saw out when I've pushed it too far (again).

My guess would be to keep the gaps open otherwise it would start to buckle and sag towards the floor. Then you can finish the last cuts at the bottom with the wedges enabling you to still get a saw in.

As an aside, I use plastic chainsaw wedges as my prime method to break into D3s to recover the owner's keys.

My pics show the assembly I use to support the log while bucking it.

A big log on the ground. I then put two matching logs at right angles about 2 metres apart with some counterweight logs over the back to avoid the overbalance. These two are notched cut to hold the log undergoing surgery.

I then cut through until i just see the cut closing.

Once you have the required cuts then roll it off the trestle and cut the rest while it's on the ground with the still to cut bit uppermost.

Get the height of the notched log right to avoid too much stooping which is a good thing for an oldie like me!
