and I think we're getting close to real-life distances from fully charged. The Kia's and Hyundai's I deliver have genuine 240+ mile ranges from fully charged. On a one-way trip that has always been enough.
For me to buy one I want a minimum of 300 real-world miles and an ability to charge, say 100 miles for a 'top-up' time not exceeding 5 minutes.
More importantly it needs to be with a charger available with no more hassle than finding a petrol/diesel pump to say 'we're ready'.
The former (range/charging) is getting close, the latter (availability) is still the weak point as I said in my earlier email.
Hopefully we'll have an Evoque hybrid for SWMBO in next year (possibly her next car in about 5-6 months) and that should cover the majority of her commuting. The 'first car' is likely to be diesel for some time yet given our usage.....
That's the key thing with EVs, SN. For many who do relatively short distances such as <50 mile commutes, range anxiety shouldn't be an issue, nor should special planning be required. Plug it in in the evening, drive to work in the morning, back in the evening, plug it back in. Simple. No planning, just cheaper day-to-day "fuel" costs.
And if you cannot park your car on a driveway or near your house, an EV car does not work for that type of usage. Think of those living on Victorian terraces, blocks of flats, etc. Would be interesting to work out what percentage can reasonable and safely charge an EV at home.
The time to refresh available range needs to be comparable to current ICE cars and until then range anxiety will hold back many from making the switch.
Regards,
Steve

I think the car/EV capability is getting close and will be here 'soon', ahead of an infrastructure that can support drivers 'away from home'.
The new BMW i4 eDrive40 variant has a max range of 365 miles and a ten minute charge will top it up around 100 miles. That is getting close to what people are demanding/expecting/looking for in the vehicle even if the starting prices of £52k are somewhat high.......
Now the infrastructure needs to grow exponentially to keep pace

Not a lot out there to tow a tin tent tho yet, as far as I can see?
Friends of ours towed their very small Tab caravan, from Derbyshire up to Morar on the Scottish West coast with a Tesla Model 3 this summer, he was getting less than 100 miles range when towing which made the journey a bit of an epic as he too experienced issues in charging en route, busy or non working bays etc. It took 48 hours to charge it full from 20% using the adaptor he had for the caravan site hook up supply 😳 ⏰
Some remote chargers were taking 4 hours to get him enough to continue on the next leg although Fort William has a bank of super fast Tesla chargers.
The end of caravans? I'm not seeing a down side I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

And some of the caravan club sites will ask you to leave the site if caught charging an EV from the mains hook up post.

Oh, didn’t know that. Why? What does it cost to recharge as rule of thumb?
I don’t have an issue with caravans, well not too much, it’s Campervans!

Sure, as soon as I've got some charge to leave..... I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Was at one CL in Cornwall where each plot had a meter for electric. You had an allowance for each night of your stay but were charged if you went over, which we did not but were running fridge, hot water and heating etc.
He was thus happy for people to charge cars / run a/c etc. May be the best way forward at campsites.Disco 4

Chrimbo shopping for the only rellies that don’t get Amazon vouchers. And SWMBO insists 5 is too young to send them vouchers.

At 5 years of age they will know far more about online shopping and how to use vouchers than you or I ever will ! I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

SWMBO says not before they are 10, I argue now makes it all so much easier for us as means their parents have to decide what to get. I think my logic is undeniable but I still loose.
