I wouldn't even consider an F-Pace to be comparable option to a D5. The F-Pace is not an off-road vehicle. Best it could manage is a flat dirt road.
I am shopping for a new, diesel suv with 2 speed transfer case under $70k US. The D5 is my only option. That is a shame really.
I sort of agree, but the fpace is fab and will hold its own on most of the normal off road people see.Mike

Just had the call from the dealer for a test drive next week......
Out of interest what are people looking at as an alternative to the D4, we need a big boot and it must be good off road. We own sheep and need to tow a cattle trailer over muddy fields and rutted muddy tracks, boot needs to be big to carry hay and kit.
Only thought was to go for a 4x4 twin cab of some description MY16 HSE Firenze Red Loving it

Its a really nice motor, better quality interior and better technology BUT from my perspective its let down by the practicality. As lots of you will know, boot space is a priority for me and in short the D5's just isnt as good for my needs as the D4s. I thought looking at it a second time would be better but as soon as that massive door opened my heart sank. The sales guy saw it in my face and said "no good?" we spent 30 mins discussing and comparing to the D4 and he actually said they had recieved quite a few negatives about the boot
What exactly is the problem with the boot? Is it the size, as in too small compared to the D4, the rounded edges, or is does the 'event platform' thing simply get in the way of everything?
Looking at this photo, with it pointing up, is it always up, or flat inside the boot when not in use?
I can see this being a problem with a dog cage as the cage will I guess sit on top of the event platform, thus making it useless
Not in a position to purchase a D5, but just interested in what exactly are the 'boot problems' Iggy/Ieuan

Boot can be configured.
At loading height D5 boot is wider.
Bigger when 7 seats are in use
Longer when 2 seat are in use

Would be interesting to see what happens if you pack the boot a bit tight. With the lower tailgate, you could maybe put a bit of body weight behind it to get it closed, then load higher up through the upper tail gate.
Will the flap not close if there is anything against it that might make it think something is blocking it? Might make packing a full boot a bit of a pain. I guess you would have to have it closed, and pack up to it, to ensure it would close, and therefore the boot close?

Yes it does, it is much rounder on the edges, unlike the D3/D4Iggy/Ieuan

Well had my test drive today, spent 1hr with the car on my own, so had a good play around. Overall I'm impressed, loadspace looks smaller than I remember it and the rear seats are lower and felt uncomfortable and head height not fantastic but can live with it. The overall quality is fantastic, feels solid and well put together, even the cat flap in the boot felt sturdy. Performance felt good, sprightly and though there was a it of body roll I didn't think it was any worse than any other large vehicle in the range.
And now , why I cancelled. Twice previously I went in to cancel based on price. I wanted an S but can't get upgraded headlights or the 3.0, without these it's a downgrade IMO. So explained to dealer that I would take my deposit back. "Don't worry your a loyal customer and a deal on an SE would be on the table" Well today that deal is non existent, can't make it work, no discount on new car no movement in the used value of mine. So I politely asked for a refund, which I wanted 3 months ago and only kept the order going because of this allusive deal. I feel as though they have an extra car and don't need to discount the new one because they can sell it for full price. I feel used.
As impressed as I was, to me it ain't worth more than what I'm paying for my D4. So big Blue has returned home where it should've stayed in the first place, I may buy side tubes as an apology. I should've listened to my instinct months ago. I'm not disappointed as such more annoyed.
To those who are waiting for there D5s enjoy, it is a nice car overall and those wanting Namib Orange it is fantastic in the flesh, seen it today shining in the sun, beautiful.
So there is an SE going begging that will be built and delivered before the tax hike 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I'm still a fan of the brand but it's dwindling as there are other offerings now that drive better, use less fuel and have better tech. I no longer do much off-road other than sports fields or dirt tracks so it's the other functions of the vehicle that are starting to be more important to me
Which Land Rover was ever the best driving, most economical or most techie?
I think you've missed the point I was trying to make, in the past there was nothing else to touch a Discovery for all round versatility at the price point, now there are lots of credible alternatives out there and some are a lot cheaper.
The D5 is a fabulous machine but it's not really unique any more.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
