How would this avoid eventual extra taxes if there is no trade agreement with EU?It takes all sorts (to make a world).

Well I've just watched the Andrew Neil program on BBC1. I can't say I learnt anything at all by listening to TM. She's going to get the best deal possible, believes that it can be done in time and everything is going to be great. So same old story.
As the negotiations haven't started why should TM have anything different to say?==================================

Indeed, I did wonder what was the point of her speaking. Or the whole program for that matter!
Perhaps I was hoping that she might have held a little bit of information back until today.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Because the UK are apparently going to try to exempt Ireland from any tariffs, to save the peace arrangements regarding Northern Ireland, and to ensure the Common Travel Area, and to ensure that there is no physical border between North and South Ireland (which there isn't at present).
Ireland will be happy because they will gain financially from all the extra traffic using our roads and rail networks (such as the rail networks are here!!)....!!2016 Discovery 4 Commercial

Actually what has been said is in the Article 50 letter is:
Quote:
In particular, we must pay attention to the UK's unique relationship with the Republic of Ireland and the importance of the peace process in Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland is the only EU member state with a land border with the United Kingdom. We want to avoid a return to a hard border between our two countries, to be able to maintain the Common Travel Area between us, and to make sure that the UK's withdrawal from the EU does not harm the Republic of Ireland. We also have an important responsibility to make sure that nothing is done to jeopardise the peace process in Northern Ireland, and to continue to uphold the Belfast Agreement.
No mention of tariff free trade. And while it would be possible to have tariff free trade between UK and Ireland, the EU would simply apply tariffs on all UK originated goods passing through Ireland to the rest of the EU thus shutting that door.==================================

It may not have been mentioned in the letter, but it has certainly been discussed at high levels between the UK and Ireland at recent talks.........2016 Discovery 4 Commercial

But not necessarily the other way around, goods coming from the EU to the UK through Ireland, i.e. parts for Discovery on their way to Solihull, for example....
Easy enough for stuff to be labelled as destined for Ireland, then relabelled in Ireland before being transported through Belfast to the UK.....!!2016 Discovery 4 Commercial

Sorry mate think its wishful thinking, there is no way if its a hard Brexit, that even if they allow tariff free trade between Ireland and Britain, that they would allow such a loophole to exist.
And why would the UK allow EU goods in via Ireland tariff free and have to pay a tariff to export to the EU, that's the worst of both worlds!!!==================================

Perfect example, then, of why Land Rover (for example) have the right idea in assembling EU LHD models at the Slovakian plant, by the time Brexit is complete.
That is the way to do it, instead of physically exporting from the UK to the EU, you set up an EU factory branch and do everything in the EU....
Your HQ and staff involved in design etc can still be in the UK....
It also saves on having to bring in migrant workers too, I suppose!
Still messes up imports though, true enough. But that's the price to pay for leaving, who knows?2016 Discovery 4 Commercial

That plant was announced long before the referendum and currently there are only plans to build the D5 there, although it was slated to be where the new Defender would be built.==================================

If LR can make more money building in Slovakia then that's what they'll do. No reason for them not to move the entire production out there if the deals are right. They could keep a UK design base in order to trade on the "British engineering" cachet but other than that, why not move?
LR are a foreign-owned manufacturer with global ambitions and markets. Building in the UK is not necessary in order to fulfill those ambitions and service those markets.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I agree.... and what will not try to do either is smuggle of cars across Ireland....Ireland belongs to the EU and anything that should be negotiated will be in Brussels therefore a bilateral agreement with the UK is not possible. ...
...Another diferent thing is that culturally related companies choose Ireland for relocation from the UK, I think that is very possible and good for Ireland .....and as I understand it if something is good for Ireland is good for the EU lost in translation!

No, it's not. We would do so because it's economic rationality in the event of no deal (and in general).
We only trade to get imports - we don't want to be applying tariffs to them, even if other people do. Sure it's nice if other people share the same sanity, but if they don't, it's no reason to harm ourselves by applying tariffs. They also raise the value of the pound, thus hurting our own exporters too.
This is why the whole "negotiation" aspect is based on a ridiculous premise. People talk about "access" to the EU market as if it's a concession on the EU's part, when it's actually the whole point of trade...
