Illogical though it seems, it happens all the time and not just in the car industry 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

Yes and no... to fill overseas inventory they must to build and stock vehicles based on some kind of [internal] forecasting. Somewhere (don’t remember where I read it) it was stated that it takes up to 4 months for a “build to order” LR vehicle to appear at a dealer in USA. The ro-ro carriers are probably kept running with fairly high load factors. Naturally, UK inventory doesn’t have such lead times.
To me the number sounds reasonable as it has taken roughly 2 months for a Gothenburg, Sweden “built to order” Volvo to be delivered (to me) in Helsinki, Finland.

“The cuts are understood to have been triggered by a 26% drop in JLR sales in the UK in the first three months of 2018. Sales in Germany, Europe’s biggest car market dropped 32%”

They work on a JIT 'order to build' basis ...though delay builds through line capacity issues. Some like to compare builds to other marque lines without taking this into account and therein lies another myth 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Yeah, sounds very similar to what Volvo has. The minimum time from ordering to completion was 6 weeks (since they offered factory pickup) and an additional 2 weeks for transporting.
Even though Volvo repeats the “every car is built for a specific customer” mantra, the distributors tend to have near immediate stock but they’re always white/grey/black or announced as “we received a special batch”.
