This viewpoint is fairly naive IMO because it conveniently sets aside two fundamentals, those being:

- The D3\4 have always been driven by yummy mummy\family oriented types in far higher proportions than the perception of it being targeted to some specialist market i.e. for use off road. I seem to recall that it was estimated by LR that only 5% of all D3\4 sold would have been off road in any meaningful way for example.

- The D5, whatever is thought of it, is built to execute it's extremely capable off road credentials to the fullest extent in a way that some could argue is even better than the D3\4...e.g it has new technology and it is much lighter.

So for all the casual comparisons to the wholly road biased competitors and the accusation of a complete dumbing down of the D5 ...aside from the aesthetics... IMO in truth little has changed.

People can carry on inflating other brands such as the Volvo as a direct competitor ..but in reality it is selling for a price not too distant from the D5 but without anywhere near the same level of capability.

@DG.

Its all about perception & appearances... Its just that Volvo has a younger and fresher 'appearance', and JLR is perceived as 'oldy worldly' ,

thus two reasons its NOT in the front line of 'yummy mummy' her shopping list.. Also woman go for nice bottoms and the D5 has anything but[t] a nice rear end Mr. Green

You’ll have to forgive my naivety DG; living on the M25, as you do, you probably get a much better idea of what Yummy Mummies are driving than us carrot crunchers out in the sticks do Rolling Eyes

I’d suggest that a lot of the more demanding buyers bought the D3/4 as it was the one, of the very few in its class, that would look more than a little uncomfortable parked outside a tanning salon Laughing The D5 may still be supremely capable off road (even if is a darn sight harder to see where the edges and corners of the car are), but it’s lost a lot more in the process of appealing to the Yummy Mummies who’ve previous idea of SUV navana was an X5 Shocked

Cool. Have they said in public what vehicles will be manufactured there? The only thing I’ve seen is, with three shifts running, the capacity will be ~150k vehicles annually. They’re starting with one shift at the end of 2018. Plus some rumors based on an environmental study that the factory can be expanded to 300k annually.

Sounds nice. So if they want to upscale, they have to sell... No point in building a factory in the EU and not selling in the EU...

Prices must come down then, to become compatative..

Indeed, I was merely pointing out the article existed, not trying to make any other point! Thumbs Up

I think they are saying for the price of a new entry level spec XC90 you could buy a year old HSE Discovery

Ukraine 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Zambezi SilverDiscovery 3

The parents at my kids school must be a prime target market: Private school, in a wealthy city (Bath) linked to the countryside. However, there are still only two D5 amongst the many D3
/4, FFRR, RRS, DS, Defenders and Evokes from LRs stable, but there were at the last count 11 new XC90, numerous Cayennes, Q5, Q7 and more recently VW camper vans. We even have 3 Ssayong RExtons bought by the horsesy set for towing.

When I drive around Bath and the surrounding area I just don’t see D5. There are six private schools full of yummy mummy’s in a predominantly professional and affluent city of 80,000. This is surely LRs target market so why aren’t we seeing them? Every other LR product is well represented.
