Im very interested in this mod for my D3. Does anyone have a contact for the guy in Russia selling the CAN adapter board? Edit: Sorted
BTW there isnt different speeds on the CAN BUS'es beetween the vehicles, but the D3 does use the 29bit(CAN 2.0B) extended ID and the D4 uses a 11bit(CAN 2.0A) identifier. The high speed (500K) and medium speed (125K) CAN bus is present on both.
Im in the middle of reverse engineer the CAN buses on my D3 now. If there are anyone around here that are familiar with analyzing a CAN bus and have a D4 im very interested their datalog. Maybe we can make an open source adapter for the D3/L322 tacho. Im very familiar with the CAN bus and programming microchips. I also have the DBC files for the D3 & D4...

That sounds promising Jan R!
You probably know a lot already.
I just looked through my old notes, I noticed that the old cluster took care of the cruise control,
abs module sends a lot of CAN signals used by few modules anything wheel speed related and D3 and D4 had different part numbers,
Speedo was square wave on D3,
D3 cluster powers the park brake module and fuel level sender... D4 handle these differently,
all gauges on D3 receive analogue signals,
Cluster trigger the 'double flash's for turn signal outage (or trailer),
Alarm/security is on cluster for D3 but I think separate module for D4.
I couldn't find much on the D4 as detailed W/Shop manual was not avail. D3 manuals I found online had start up sequence for the car's electrics.
I'm doing my AC etc on the car and I'm far from understanding or manipulating CAN signal related things on cars... Look forward to your awesomeness, Cheers

I know in most Bosch systems, the cluster works as a gateway beetween the hi speed, and medium speed bus. So the cluster is sourcing info from the different buses and relaying it to the other. Im guessing thats also the case with the D3 and D4. The D4 also have implemented the LIN bus. I have the service manuals/wiring diagrams for both the D3 & D4, and im working on setting up a github project with my findings for everybody else to join with their knowledge.
Im especially interested in getting a candump from a 2010-2012 D4, so i can compare the differences beetween the D3/D4. If anyone is interested i can maybe supply them with a CAN logger you just plug into the ODBII port and drive away with. Then we can make something happen. Its kinda hard without the D4 data to get these things working.
The main goals for me other than that i find it very interesting, is to get the TFT cluster to work with the D3, getting the Camera Control module(ah42-14f026) to work in the D3 (with the D4 navigation) and getting the D4 center console(shifter, HEVAC etc.) to work on the D3.
Im also a very big fan of open source and i think this is the way to move forward. Im guessing there is a lot of people out there with different knowledge/skills to join in.

If I had a D4 I would help you out with the data. I wonder how much of the harness and modules we'd need to have some can bis signals... Hope someone chip in

Nowadays, not much is required.
The bus itself is relatively simple, I mean in electrical terms. You have two dedicated wires (the high and low wire) with two or more nodes connected serially to it. The bus has terminators to prevent reflection of signals and keep the bus at an idle state (2.5 V) when nothing is transmitting on it. When transmitting both the high and low wires are used by the transmitting node (the transmitted voltage changes up and down respectively). All nodes listen to all traffic.
A €30 eur raspberry pi with a CAN interface card can in principle participate as a node on the bus.

Yes, communicating with the bus isnt very complicated. Im using a logic analyzer with a CAN protocol analyzer to log data on mine. I also have an CANtact CAN to USB serial which is super handy as i can both use it on linux with can-utils, and on windows 10 with SavvyCAN which is very poweful tools for decoding data and talk to the bus. Nowadays most microcontrollers also got integrated CAN, and you only need an tranceiver chip (£3) to hook up to the existing bus.

I had an idea, you could test drive a D4 at a car yard. Tell them that you've hooked up your code reader to look for faults. Or tip a nice salesman $50 for the same?
I also emailed the Russian guy who made the adapter and emailed the Russian car yard that offered the cluster swap for the RR. I never got a reply from them.

If you send a logger to Simon at powerfulUK I'm sure he would run it for you.
He has an example of most landrovers, inc. D4, RRS, I think he has a full sized one too.
He was having a sniff around the can bus a month ago, as you can see from his videos below.
...
&t=14s
I'm sure you can teach other lots.
He may want to manufature conversion kits if reliable, or sell yours.

Im not really comfortable logging data without consent I got a hold of him and i got a WhatsApp number for the guy. He read my message on whatsapp, but never responded.

Hi Jan R, how did you go? Did you get a reply from Powerful UK?
Keep us posted. even tho my tech isn't upto speed, I'm still interested in the cluster swap and related info. Cheers

I succues install TFT dash into RRS 2010. I can answer questions or give advice, or maybe, sell full DIY solution.
nex step - new wheel, after war, ofcourse

Hi Mars Rover,
yes I have been in touch with Simon. There is something he can do, and something he cannot do because of his connections to LR. I think he will be very helpful when I get started with this, but unfortunately because of some unforeseen circumstances I'm kinda strapped for time at the moment. Hopefully I can do something with him in the future.
Cheers
