Getting closer to the end destination, seeing signs.

Unfortunately we gained 4 hours of delays last night, we should be in Irkutsk. We’re not allowed out in the -9c as they hope to move off. And we got all dressed up for the occasion.

And that cute puppy. With piece of sausage roll from the Canadian chap in our carriage. He really is a sweetie (dog, not Canadian) and tail constantly wagging. Unfortunately couldn’t take him with us.

Off from Ulan Ude to the Mongolian border, now only 3 hours late. I’ll loose 4g pretty quickly and have no data in Mongolia so will update peeps once in China. If my Chinese sim doesn’t play then it’ll be from the hotel in Beijing. 11pm we start the first load of border crossing schinanigans, it’s going to be a long night. Plus even more 28 hours after that for the Chinese side where they change the train bogies.

Even better when it’s frozen, and they can drive to the other side. Lots of ice forming in rivers now, not too long until winter arrives.

Greetings from China. Just left Mongolia, now have most of a 5 hour wait left in an overcrowded transit hall while they change the bogies on the train.

Will post more pics of Mongolia from Beijing tomorrow or Wednesday, after a nice sleep in a soft bed and a most desperately needed shower or bath. And laundry, laundry might also be a priority as recycling has its limits.

Safely tucked up in the Beijing hotel, shower and much needed shave done. And GFWoC outfoxed. For now.
Pic of somewhere in Beijing from the train.

Intrigued how they changed the bogies on the train. Not terribly mechanically minded but it seems a big job. Lift the coaches off and onto other ones or jack them up and replace each one at a time?2014 MY Discovery XS Indus Silver. Sadly gone. Second last LR of forty eight years continuous ownership.

We didn’t see that. It took 3 1/4 hours to change them, all the time we were sat in an inspection waiting area. We had hoped we’d do immigration/customs and then get our heads down as all this started at 9pm local time so getting to bed at, say, 10:30 after immigration would have been bliss. And a non moving bed at that. We got to bed at 3am local and up 4 hours later for pretty rubbish free breakfast but SWMBO saw the word “free”.
Sooooooo nice to have a proper soft bed that I don’t have to climb up to. And nice and quiet, not like being in a car crash.
PS SWMBO now tells me we got to bed at zero dark 30. It just felt like 3am. Sleep deprivation and all that.
