Engine Failure SDV6 3.0
Hello community,
i am from Germany and i hope that my english is good enough for writing in this forum.
Last week i bought a Discovery 4 with engine failure.
The front timing belt is ok, the engine runs (only the left cylinder bank) but the inlet camshaft on the left side do not turn. (seen through the oil filler neck)
Now my suggestion is that the timing belt on the back is damaged or maybe the camshaft on the left side is broken?
The next steps are lifting off the body an have a look at the back side of the engine.
Is this is a known problem?
kind regards
Daniel

Possibly a cam chain has snapped.

rear belt only turns the fuel pump and as its running on one bank thats not your problem the cams are driven by chains i believe so you need to look thereplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Maybe the tensioner is broken?

Edit - Just seen your picture
Each bank on the engine has a chain at the rear with a tensioner that can wear, and the chains can break - it is not one chain that drives both sides so one side can fail.
There is a timed belt that drives the HPFP on the rear of the engine from the right hand bank of the engine, so it is a good possibility that the chain on the side of the filler neck has gone, hopefully the additional damage will not be too severe, but if the issue has been due to poor maintenance then who knows what horrors are awaiting inside the engine.
Good Luck!Must stop buying shiny toys....

Now i found the problem.
The tensioner was lying in the cylinder head.
The srews were not broken or damaged so i guess someone forgot to tighten them or with the wrong torque.
The chain is lying under the exhaust camshaft.
Tomorrow i will take a look under the cylinder head.

Today i found the chain broken in 3 pieces and the gear is turning loose on the camshaft.
Some screws of the camshafts bearing blocks were not tighten.
Now i will take down the cylinder head an have a look at the pistons.
One of the injectors look like that:
It is full of oil coal.

Today i took down the cylinder head and wondered a little bit.
At first glance the valves seemed to be all right.
The exhaust valves made marks on the pistons.
This surprised me, because the timing of the exhaust cam was correct.

Hmmmm. Loose parts on the camshafts. Exhaust valve marks on pistons.
Does this not sound like someone has had a problem before and not repaired it very well?

That is my idea too.
While lifting the body i thought about that the first time, because some srews were wrong or missing and a few plugs were damaged.
I try to contact the previous owner to find out what happened.

In the mean time i will buy an engine assembly stand and everything i need for the overhaul.
I try to get:
- a new exhaust camshaft
- main and rod bearings
- all seals
- new oil pump
- new cylinder head screws
is there anything else i will need?
