On a serious note - as the father of a gay son I've had to put up with, and he, all sorts of comments from bigoted idiots who still live in the 1950's or before. It has been illuminating how ignorant some people can be but usually I keep quiet and watch. Can't say the same for my son who is over 6', strong and fit, vocal, intelligent and will rip just about any adverse comment about minorities to pieces which I have witnessed and thought " that's my boy". I've known he is gay since he was about 12 and he angst to tell me as I was formerly very sporty which he thought had some influence on my understanding of others. Never a problem with me and we have formed a special bond which is great.
Having said that - I'm at the beginning of the journey in understanding non binary people and being known as they or them. It doesn't bother me in the least but, as usual, we stand at a distance from that we are not familiar with - but give it time........so I am somewhat embarrassed to think I started a thread lightly mocking others wishes that I am not familiar with and fell into the trap of using 'humour' as a shield.

Society is just evolving, as it always has. With religion having far less of a hold over society than it once did, some things are evolving faster. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

The question is, what's normal? The BBC will just reflect society. What are you scared of?

If that’s what they have told you they want to be referred to as, go for it.
I’ll admit I struggled a bit when my child’s choice was announced casually over dinner last summer. The world they are experiencing is a different one than the one I grew up in. Teenagers have a hard enough time figuring it out anyway. If accepting their new chosen name and pronouns is what it takes to give them the confidence to go out and take on the world, I think that’s a pretty easy choice.

I tried this new approach on my wife but thought I should tone it down a little lest she got upset. So I called her by shouting " Oy! You" and she smashed me in the face. Am I missing something?

respect, tolerance, be your own thing, that's all fine, don't think many people on here (even us old dinosaurs) haver a problem with that but when you see/hear/read people disciplined or sacked or 'non-platformed' for making a comment (whether intentionally stating a 'fact' or accidentally) it starts to get a bit 'ridiculous'.
Latest one? Train announcer comes over tannoy with "Good morning Ladies, gentlemen, girls and boys" and one complaint from (I think) someone who identifies as non-binary and the company goes into meltdown issuing public apologies and talk of 're-training' all staff, etc.
Now that response is where it gets ridiculous. Is any announcement to be completely neutral ("good morning passengers") or to be fully compliant and offend nobody it should list the 100+ (?) currently 'recognised' pronouns. Yet another example of the minority taking a precedent over the majority and it is that which tends to get people miffed, not what they identify themselves as
I don't expect to be called 'sir' or 'Mr' in any interaction but do take umbrage at the almost universal use of "you guys" (I'd generally say this is a phenomena of the restaurant trade) but I am sure I would be considered pompous if I went "er, excuse me, it's Mr to you, bring me the manager and the newspapers, I want to make a formal complaint"
The world has gone mad

The train company response will be an attempt to prevent someone suing them. "We've taken action, look!". In reality, the training will probably just be someone saying "Look Bob, just say "good morning" and leave it at that from now on, eh?". There'll be a paper trail, of course, but that'll be the crux of it.
I'm with you on the "you guys" thing. That feels like something that has come over the Atlantic from our US cousins. My mother always gives her very best Paddington Bear stare if someone uses that phrase. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk
