……seeing that democracy is cited as a fundamental right what’s the opinion on other Oxford house lecturers refusing to teach members of Oxford *Oriel house, and seeking to encourage other lecturers to join them?
*Oriel house voted to refuse to take down a statue of Rhodes
Very silly. All their lives people have told them they are clever / special / right.

I hate fkg cancel culture!
You can't undo what has been done but you can educate and inform so that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. Use these statutes etc to do just that. Put the individuals and their actions in the context of their time.
I'd love to have a trawl through the family history of some of these cancel culture twonks. I'm sure there are many unsavoury characters in their family history. How would they eradicate that?D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)

This is all getting silly and out of hand now….
I disagree with them trying to get others to not teach. If they, as individuals, wish to withhold teaching then that's up to them and between them and their employer.
My own view is that it would be better to discuss the issue as adults and explain why people think that Rhodes was/wasn't a bad man and should/shouldn't be memorialized.
The same with those who would prevent "unsuitable" people from talking at the Oxford Union. You don't, in my opinion, show how someone is wrong by simply banning them from talking. Much better to debate with them and demonstrate why their position is wrong/untenable/whatever. Nothing like publicly taking apart someone's position in a logical and thoughtful way to stop the propagation of that position. If you want to stop the spread of an extremist view, take it apart in debate and show why it's misconceived. Just banning the speaker effectively makes them a political martyr in the eyes of their followers.
I do wonder if the reason some of these advocates of banning people from talking take that position because they are not, themselves, qualified enough to debate the subject. If you can't formulate and put forward an argument as to why someone else's position is unsavoury, then you need to do more work on your own position/understanding etc..
In my opinion, of course. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

My "NHS Hobby" got renamed from Wegener's Granulomatosis to "GPA" (Granulomatosis with polyangiitis) several years ago due to a belief that Wegener colluded with the Nazis during WW2.
One of my consultants (who effectively saved my life by using bleeding-edge treatments) had met the guy and happily swears that Wegener didn't do that ... but the idea he did was popular and thus the name got changed.
However, not a single medic on my team has ever referred to it as GPA unless it's part of the phrase "I suppose we should call it GPA now".
I suspect that is how these historic characters will be regarded in the (not too distant) future ... you can't actually change history.
(unless you are Russian or Chinese history book writers.)
Fanta is Nazi in origin and people still drink it. People walk around with Hugo Boss writ large on their clothes - he designed (and profited) from Nazi uniforms. Haber (of the Haber-Bosch process) fed millions via increased crop yields yet he researched and developed the poison gases which the Nazis took further as Zyklon B to use in their gas chambers (not that it is particularly relevant but Haber was a Jew).

Going back to the original question - wtf is happening in this country?
Sexual harassment between children - for example boys constantly asking girls for nude photos, and other inappropriate behaviour. And it seems that it is becoming normalised.

SWMBO is doing something for her school as part of a week-long activity to highlight Cyberbullying ... which "obviously" means I'm scouring t'interweb to assist in the creation of a PowerPoint presentation on the subject.
Found one site that initially looked helpful for resources, albeit a bit USA-centric.
There was a quiz for teens to do to help them understand that they are not alone in experiencing it and showing them the right things to do to avoid it or extract themselves from it.
Without, hopefully, sounding like an aging perv ... I think it was question 19 before the (unnecessary) accompanying picture was NOT of an attractive young lady using her phone.
I think "we" have created a social media environment for our kids that, whilst proclaiming "it's ok to be just you", still shoves the "ideal thin pretty girl" as the only "norm".
No wonder many will do anything asked of them just to feel accepted..

My youngest daughter (16) was spending a lot of time with one of her brothers friends (he is 15). She always changed the subject of whether or not they were dating. One day her brother told us they had split. She wouldn't tell us why but her brother did.
Apparently this lad was asking for nudes. She told him to off and her brother (a keen rugby player and with a short temper) was out to get him. Plus this lad was scared of my dogs for some reason.
Just glad that she had the sense to kick him to the kerb.2004 Disco 3 HSE TDV6
