Hi Mark, as posted, the Optima ( D34 ) drops right in and the cover goes back on with out any problems and a number of other batteries can be modified ( by cutting off some of the battery posts ) to fit, you just need to experiment with a few batteries to get the one that fits.
The link below is to a thread on batteries for the D3 and has lots of info about different batteries being used by D3 owners

I couldn't find a cheap yellow top in Brisbane last year, all robbers. 06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

There was a discount to AULRO members last year. Not sure if it is still in place - but I got one for about $340, delivered.

You could also contact Marty at FHRX Studios in Sydney. They're a car audio place, but usually have great prices. Their list price on the D34 YT is $475, but I would expect they'd do better than that. No affiliation, just a happy customer.

$340 is a very, very good price!

OK, sounds like the traxide is the way to go. Now to decide between the two models !!
Also, just confirming, the Optima D34 is the one that fits the D3 tray ? Found them for $350 in Penrith. New MY15 TDv6 D4 in Buckingham Blue

I have gone for a differnt battery option. I wanted the biggest or largest AH battery I could fit. I have successfully fitted a 80 AH Haze (golf buggie battery. This cost approx $270.
I have are using the ARB smart solenoid unit I removed from my previous 2000 TD5 disco 2. So far it is working great. This is the largest battery that I elieve you can fit and is a quality deep cycle sealed gel battery. You cant use the battery box cover with it as it is too tall. You also need to grid away about 5mm of the plastic ribs on the inside front edge of the battery box. But if you are after the biggest capacity you can fit then I think this is it. Id need to confirm model for those interested but think it was HZY-12V-80 with the insert threaded terninal. (Note Post terminals will be too close to bonent)

Hi Horto, keep an eye on that battery as it’s not really suited to the high voltages the D3 regularly operate at.
The maximum charge voltage that the Haze are designed to be charged at is 14.4 volts ( the typical maximum Gel battery charge voltage ).
This is where the Optima is ideally suited as it’s normal tolerable charging voltage is 15v.

I just fitted a Century deep cycle that runs
my 80l Waeco for about 16 hrs before dropping below
the preset cutout point (11.7v i think)
I know this battery is not ideally siuted to a fast charge.
After the fridge cut out i went for a half hour drive and the
battery still hadnt charger to 12v.
How long should it take to recharge the battery Pete

Hi Peter, from flat ( 10.5v ) it would probably take around 8 hours, remember there are a lot of verbalise that will need to be factored in, so these are very rough ideas.
From 11.7, ( the battery is a little under 30% SoC ) you would still need about 5 to 6 hours to fully charge the battery BUT you will probably get the bulk of the charge back into the battery ( up to around 80 to 85% ) in about 3 hours and while away on a trip, if you discharge the battery to a fairly low state and then do around 3 to 4 hours driving when moving from one location to another, you can pretty well keep up with your required power needs.
Once you return home, it’s a good idea to get the auxiliary battery on to a battery charger so it can finally be fully charged.

Peter,
I recently fitted a Optima D34 with a Traxide unit.
My 110L Waeco (with just some cooler blocks in the freezer set at -16c) ran for 21 hours, before cutting out.
This test was without starting the D3
Cheers,
Steven

The battery is directly charged off the alternator.
Should this still take 8 hours.
Steve
the deep cycle batteries are great for running the fridge
110 L is huge ...i have trouble fitting the 80l in the back Pete
