Just had installed the Rotronics 3 way battery controller. See Rotronics website. Was recommended by friend. All the writen information is written by an engineer who loves capitals and colour. The logic of it is sound. aux battery is yellow top Optima with the standard LR LHD bracket and bolts from LR. Been away for the weekend with the brand new Trakkie and it worked great. Used the white trailer plug site for the caravan camera plug site. Mounted the radio on top of the duct under the seat, upside down (the speaker is on its underside), with Velcro so it can easily be taken out before river crossings. The remote head is in the central top cubby with room still for the specs and Magellan crossover . The audio is good and not intrusive. The mike sits in my drink cup unless otherwise occupied..Antenna is laterally on the following edge of the bonnet.. There are many ways to skin cats, or dogs for that matter.

Wanting the longest run time that would fit - we custom fit an Odyssey 2150 - HUGE long, wide, tall - similar to Optima just bigger. We made an extended ledge/bracket but it uses the same standard location. Wired to control switch just inside left rear panel at tailgate along with the 2nd air compressor switch. 96 Disco I, 210,000 miles - still going strong
04 Disco II, Vienna/Tundra, +2" lift, onboard air, 120V...

I fitted the Traxide controller (SC80-LR) www.traxide.com.au on Sunday with an Optima Yellow. Have to say Traxide's instructions and the product being absoultely custom for the Disco 3 made this idiot proof (and yes, I've manged to stuff most things up - but not this!). Great product and highly recommended to Disco 3 owners. MY2010 D4 HSE 3.0, e-diff, 19inch MTR's; LLAMS Height adjustor, LR f & r light guards, LR side steps, LR bright finish side door mouldings; LR/Mantec G4 front bash plate, LR G4 Winch kit, Warn 9500lb Winch; GOE compressor guard, Uniden UHF, LR bright finish roof rails, LR G4 driving light kit, LR G4 ladder, 4 x extra rear compartment 12V sockets, Traxide dual battery system and Optima Yellowtop battery, ORS drawer system / fridge slide, LED rear compartment lighting.

$340 is a very, very good price!

I just noticed - FHRX have the D34 yellow top on sale now - for $380.

I have also installed the Traxide kit, I was VERY impressed with how well crafted the kit was and how detailed and easy the instructions were. Well done DriveSafe !
I got an Optima Yellow Top D34 for $350 from car audio excellence in Penrith:

Anyone know where I can get a Hella connection (rather than the cigarette lighter) to mount in the rear cargo area for my fridge ?
Bye.

Hi Scott,
Try the 12 Volt Shop:

They are in Perth, but do mail order. I have had good service from them in the past.

Where did you run the cables down to the rear.. are they through the body or chassis?
Cheers

From memory, i used a grommet in the firewall to enter the drivers footwell the followed the drivers side sill down to the back seat and the inside the boot plastic side wall. I think it was 30amp cable. Not very hard - a few hours work. Works fine. Disco 2 TD5 "Good"

The D3 would have to be one of the easiest to run cable from the engine bay to the rear that I have ever worked on.
It’s a simple job and makes for a safe cable installation, anybody considering running cable to the rear, whether it’s for a dual battery set up ( for a second battery in the rear or in a camper trailer or caravan ) or to fit some extra power sockets, running the cable through the D3 is far safe than running it under the D3 and probably just as easy. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

Brilliant Autron LED 12 V dual battery monitor / gauge!! |
|
My brother has just bought a run out D3 and trumped me with fitting this very nifty LED 12V gauge at the same time he fitted Traxide dual battery system etc; Standard design includes "satin finish" surround that is a perfect match for the D3 instrument surrounds. Put this in the spot reserved for the spot light switch (left of steering wheel) and its looks briliant and almost factory fit!! They turn red and beep when voltage on either battery drops. Will add photo shortly!
Ofcourse they're not cheap.....

There's alot on this subject but anyway:
Question:
I'm going to go for the Optima YT (D34) as second battery, and the Traxide wiring. Being that its fairly cold where we live would it be a good thing to swap the original battery for an Optima YT (D34).
I.e. have 2 YT's with the Traxide solution?
Would this give better starting /give sufficient CCA, or am I better off with the original cranking battery?
Thanks.

Hi oysbjerk, if your existing cranking battery is not giving you any problems, why not just stick with it and see how it performs and if the need arises to get a new cranking battery, try an Optima then if you think you can get an advantage for an Optima.
The D3 electrics are optimised to charge your existing battery and automatically adjusts the charging voltage in accordance with the ambient temperature at the time when you cold start.
One of the main controlling factors as to how well your battery will perform, ( more so than low temperatures ) is the amount of driving time you do each time you start your D3. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

Now that explains why my secondary wont charge when its freezing outside !!
I know what to look for now....

Hi gps-au, we don’t have anywhere near the temperature differences that oysbjerk gets in Norway and as such, the difference in charge voltage would have little to do with your second battery not charging.
What sort of set up have you got and how do you use it? 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7
