So, no recurrence for a week an I was going ignore it as a one off.

Then 10 minutes into the dash to drop the youngest in Lancaster, it came back on. Back near home and it was on when I parked up 90 mins ago. Banging Head

And, of course, returned to the car and the fault cleared as I drove off.

Have to have a good look at it this morning.

Had a look at getting the young 'un to get the rail replacement bus to save me having to go back to Lancaster this afternoon but it's saying 13hr 19minutes Lancaster to Manchester !

So plan is park it on the flat and overfill coolant by a mark or two on the reservoir then see how it is after the trip.

The needle never budged from it's normal 1/2 a degree above horizontal position yesterday, so I'm confident it's a sensor issue.

This, my theory anyway, will show me if it is losing fluid.

One question: are the water pipes "hard" when engine is at temperature? I know cars I had in the distant past were, but never had need to test on either D4 and things have moved on since Morris 1300s and Hillman Hunters Laughing

OK... a cupful of 50/50 brought the level about 3mm above the lowest ridge, just above the plate with hole in.

Can't see how to access the sensor, I'll scour YouTube in a bit.

And whilst the youngster managed to get a train through to Wigan and save me a lot of piddling about, the fooking warning light came on about 10 mins into the trip. WTF is going on ?

Water hoses will get "harder" when engine up to temp as the pressure will be up if no leaks present.
Had intermittent low coolant alarms for a while - no access to the float, so replacement tank cured this.

I think that is where I am heading ... just trying to get a known good 2nd hand at the mo, as I'm buying other stuff from a breaker.

alternative is reservoir/sensor/cap from eBay.

Have also noticed, whilst checking this, my power steering fluid is a shade under the minimum level. Obviously not related but I'll get some of that this week too. From memory, it's the most expensive type on the market. Previous D4 Censored it out through the o-ring(s) so I'll look at getting those at the same time.

Check the antifreeze concentration and condition. I've seen floats sinking when the the bottle is just filled with water or has a low concentration.

It's 50/50 mix but not been changed for about 3 years IIRC.

Container says it has a 5-year life so maybe it's due a change?

I got an intermittent warning on my D4, I replaced the whole bottle including new sensor. It's wasn't too bad but I did need to buy some remote cable-operated hose clip pliers

Here's my thoughts: https://disco4.com/forum/post2222752.html#2222752

Cheers, James.

I'll look at getting a remote clip tool.

You won’t regret buying them so long as you put them where you can find them in a hurry Laughing I have a pair of adjustable pliers that I have extended the handles by about 10”(cheapo version).
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
