Was an interesting flight. We took off, I ordered a vino (it was included) then after 2 schwigs we were heading down. And for an old a/c type it certainly has a lot of fancy screens! Plus it’s really sad when the flight deck peeps look like they’ve just out of school.
Could be the plane is older than them N486HA is 21 years old and thus allowed to drink alcohol in USA

A “few” more whale pics. This was easily the best whale watching we’ve ever done, we saw mamas & calfs, single whales, whales jumping right out the water (too far away for pics) and whales sticking a fin out the water to wave at us.
Mother and calf. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

We even came across a group of about 6 whale in a competitive group, all pushing and shoving underwater to get the attention of a female.

And a few pics from the W side of Maui.
Thursday’s sunset. Very pretty sunset but someone, and I’m talking about a Hawaiian god fellow, put an island in the way.
And while still in Lahaina, looks like this place needs a bigger shop!! Now that would be scary swimming towards you with a glint in its eye!
And the local banyan tree. It looks like about 12 trees but it’s only one single tree!! Nice and shady place to loiter.
Yesterday (yesterday Hawaii time rather than yesterday UK time) took the bus up to the NW corner and Kapalua, figured the weather was fine in Lahaina and packed light and for sun. Bad move. We started a short coastal walk, windy but nice views and dramatic pics.
There’s a coastal pathway there which was surrounded by condos, houses and golf courses. Once you were on it it was go back or forward only. That’s when the rain that’s in the back of this pic caught us. Zero shelter.
It was chucking it down, blowing a houlie and we soon got soaked to the skin from head to foot. And yes, we didn’t have our wetties with us coz I didn’t think we’d need them. We got to the bus stop, half hour wait for the bus, then a wet and very cold ride back to Lahaina as the buses tend to have AC at max boost all the time. Lesson learned, don’t listen to moi when it comes to packing wetties!
And today we picked up our hire car, got that until we fly out on Tuesday. We then headed round the NW corner of the island, which has some pretty dramatic scenery and tight twisty roads.
It was getting windier and windier so stops were fewer and fewer, and opening the car door safely was becoming more of challenge. Not sure Alamo would like Geraldine, the Jeep Compass, returned with two doors missing,
And ironically we ended up at Kapalua exactly 24 hours after we’d been standing like two drowned rats waiting on the bus! And it was sunny!!
And finally for today, dinner from the local ice cream place.
Biscuit Cookie and ice-cream with a smile, scrummy and consumed under the banyan tree above.

Glad you survived the weather! Reminds me very much of our trip to French Polynesia a few years ago. Same part of the world I suppose, a lot of water in between.

We’ve found out that wild weather is pretty routine for the top end of this island. Really windy, really bad squalls so ideal for a golf resort!

And that’s all folks from Maui. Didn’t think it would be as busy as it is, and as developed. Some lovely places, enjoyed staying in right in the middle of Lahaina. Checked in for next flight and a nice easy off tomorrow to the airport.
A few more pics from Maui.

Drove to the top of Haleakala. Bit twisty!
It’s the the biggest dormant volcano on the planet. Weather looked OK from low down, but this was the view from the top. It’s s’pose to be very spectacular.
Pics from the Road to Hana. 52 miles, 620 curves, 58 single lane bridges, lots of narrow bits with big drops and several hundred hire cars, plus locals that didn’t take prisoners! It’s one of the must do things for Maui that, trust me, is better seen via Google Street View. Luckily MrsDSL shared the driving.

And to the Haleakala NP at the other side of the volcano. That was 10 miles further on from Hana, at the edge of what we could do in our hire car. After that the road is forbidden as it degraded to a trail with a bit of tarmac every now and again. And yes, it rained. A LOT for a short time. Unfortunately it made all the trails really muddy and slick, at least we had light boots on rather than flip flops or sandals as on quite a few feet. Oh, that mud in the toes feeling.

Another banyan tree.

Bamboo forest. This was where we turned round and squished our way back.

Tomorrow is another travel day, get Geraldine back to OGG airport on as close to fumes as we dare (full tank for £1 was a bargain). Gratuitous pic of Geraldine and catch y’all on next island, Kauai.

And aloha from Kauai, kind of the most westerly main Hawaiian island before hitting China. Much nicer island than Maui, less touristy, better scenery and less rain. OK, some rain today at the top of a hill but not too bad. Plus all islands have an extreme rain alert (heavy snow on top of the 2 big volcanoes on Big Island ), starting E and working W, it’s going to be a bit wet (read that as very wet) Fri & Sat! Did I say one of the first things we bought when we arrived in Kona was sun screen? Not needed that much!
Pics from flying into the island.

Note rainbow. Not a good sign.

Today was a drive up to one of the state parks. Fantastic scenery, very Jurassic Park. The entry to the State Park parking and viewing areas would have been $20 for us two and the car but plenty of really good “unofficial” view points, that $20 has paid for a roast chuck, bottle of wine and half a tub of yoghurt, Hawaii is painfully expensive!!

Bit of photobombing by yours truly on lower right, unless there’s an equally handsome and rugged dude in a blue t-shirt who’s also holidaying on Kauai at the same time.
Note helicopter in next pic, that’s $350 each saved as they were soon grounded as the cloud came down.

I knew I should have bought that “NASA Rocket Scientist” T-shirt in Chicago, would have given us unlimited access here.
Rest of today is a bit of a flopping afternoon. Nice beach at the hotel with lots of waves, they say good for surfing. Hotel has a pool but a bit nippy to expose the body. Lucky escape for peeps here!
And to finish with, a nice load of coconut trees palms.
PS And gratuitous pic of Nigel the Neeeeeeeesan. A 3.5l V6 Murano with only 2,200 miles on the clock and still has that lovely new car/leather smell. It’s a really, really nice car, way better than the last Jeep, Geraldine. And the best part is it has a nice big fuel tank (19 usGal) which is good if you have full gas service which we got for the princely sum of £1. In theory get the car back to the airport on fumes, any extra we could flog to the locals!

Few pics from Kauai, moving on tomorrow. Really nice island, beautiful scenery and a lot less touristy than Maui.
Day trip up to the N coast, gorgeous views on the way.
Bit of rain keeping the tarot fields green.
And SWEEEEEEEET chuck little ‘uns.
Lovely beach, though didn’t go for a dip. Didn’t want to scare the locals and have a great white alert go out in my name.
Next day was a lot cloudier but it didn’t come to much. Walk along the sea front over load of lava and ash flows.
These are trees that were caught in an ash fall, then casts made of them. I think.
And a gratuitous lava cave.
Love the fire truck with a surfboard on top. I know it’s for rescues but it still looks like mixing business with surfing.
And more chickens, this time in Safeway’s car park. And yes, we had roast chuck for dinner. Now that’s what I call low food miles!!
Chickens are everywhere around this island and Maui.
Today was a complete wash out, chucking it down and blowing a hoolie. We just hunkered down and did a bit of planning for next jolly.
And we both got the fright of our lives when both of our phones started blasting an emergency alert. No Sherlock, we were watching it out the window and following the aircraft that couldn’t land at the local airport on the tracker.
Nice leisurely morning tomorrow, lunchtime flight to Honolulu and then see what the set of H 5-0 looks like. Catch y’all there.
PS Just has the emergency alert on the TV, including the phrase “don’t drown”! Sounds quite bad over on the Big Island, fair few places we visited or stayed at.

Lots of peeps wanting beemed up and sent somewhere sunny!!!
At least they waited til the credits. On the Hawaii news it looked pretty bad, glad we were this end of the storm and not further east.
Another pack up and move day, and the good news for the peeps of Honolulu, we managed to get our laundry done.
