Ohh the California Zephyr - I did it a few years ago pre Covid to Ottumwa Iowa as it was the easiest way to get near a customers office. Seemed like a great idea based on experience of trains around the world, private room etc, with bed - should be a great way to get there and have some sleep on the way (I thought ) The reality with the rickety tracks and constant horn blowing however it was a bit of a nightmare. The other slight annoyance was that the included meal was only half way through when they arrived into my station.Must stop buying shiny toys....

Yep, passed through Ottumwa last night but at about 7pm, booked a 5pm slot for dinner so could see the sunset.
And useless fact no 5,381,496, Ottumwa was the fictional home town of Radar of MASH fame.

We’ve just stopped so the train crew can dig out a switch (points we think in UK speak). They didn’t sound phased but thoughts go to the aforementioned Christie film.
PPPS A guy we’ve been talking to on the train lives in Mammoth CA and his friends have today dug a tunnel in the snow to his front door. They’ve had over 20ft of snow at his altitude (9,000ft) and double at the tops (12,000ft). Photo of the photo on his phone, taken today. It’s snow joke I tell ya!

Also those amounts of snow are dangerous on the roofs and lead to building collapses.. depending on type the snow can weigh quite a lot.

Soon it might be pics from inside the train compartment with the snow creeping up the windows! Definite disadvantage of being on the lower deck!

PPPPS the assistant conductor has just announced that they’ve misaligned (we reed that as knackered) the switch/points and we’ll be a few minutes more, but with updates every 15 to 20 minutes. How does that work?

And they are moving serious freight along these mountain lines. One train was 2 locos at the front and I counted 133 freight cars (ore, oil, empty log trucks and scrap metal) then a loco at the back. This was an oil train, the 2 locos are just out of sight to the right and one at the far end.
