Fuel economy comparison

This will probably be stating the obvious, but it helped to hammer home the message to me....
Drove 150 miles this morning hard on the accelerator when ever overtaking, as a result 22mpg.
Return journey on the same route (same average speed), with snail pace acceleration, and I managed 32.9mpg.
This is the first time I have managed over 30mpg, and so I am very happy. In future I will reserve the foot to the floor for emergencies only.

Drove to Surrey for the Fairmile meet last week, had plenty of time so sat at 60mph most of the way. Got 36mpg (according to computer). Got 33mpg for identical trip back. Is going west up hill or is that the headwind effect??

Would be useful to know if your motor is an Auto or a manual transmission vehicle? I sense the penalties for pushing things are significantly more with the Autobox.

It is indeed an auto, TDV6. I wonder whether using the manual? shifting on an auto box (the bit next to the sport mode on the shifter) would help at all?

I was so proud of my 32.9mpg that I kept on going on about it at dinner. I have a London to Aberdeen trip on monday so I will see what I can get on that.

I have noticed that at 60mph there is no wind noise, at 70 it is audible, and at continental speeds I do have to turn up/off the radio. For aberdeen I will try to keep the speed between 60-70 to eek out every extra mile.

It seems like I am turning into a miser when it comes to buying fuel. But being 27 and having really streched to buy the car in the first place every extra mile out of the tank really counts. Going from a range of 400miles to over 600 has generated a huge smile on my face. But it has got me thinking.....what can I do to reduce the weight of my Disco? Would carbon fibre panels help, or would it just look like it crashed into halfords?

The impact of wind direction/speed on MPG is considerable - akin to the comments in this thread about the difference between sporting and sedate driving. A 25mph headwind will have a very obvious effect.....

The figures your 'puter indicated look a tad optimistic to me.............

Been following computer figures by putting the actual fuel used into excel & calculating actual mpg. Unfortunately for the Fairmile run I'm still on the same tank of diesel so haven't worked out the actual yet, the rest of the tank had been used up locally so mpg is going to Hell in a handcart but still over 31! The trip mpg tended to be about 5-7 % optimistic before the enhancement, now it is only a percent or two out so not too unreliable. In my wife's D3, mostly used for short trips locally & offroading, the display is rarely over 22, often under 20.

over about 5'000km (since I last reset the computer when we drove to England), we are stuck absolutely spot-on 10 litres/100 km. Thats 28.25mpg in your money Smile

That's including some plodding at 80kph and some hill climbing on several mountain passes.

Motorway speed for me is 140kph (87mph).

All-in-all I am impressed Smile

With 61k miles on the clock, much of this is Motorway [I travel througout the UK]. My motorway speeds are between 70 & 80 mph [overspeed warning is set at 75mph]. I never thrash the D3 and overall consumtion is 27.1mpg [I used to get *28mpg when it was newer]. However when I travel locally around country roads, mpg drops to around 22.6 mpg...not good news for a Tight North Yorkshire Scot!!

Great fun it was, just been out washing Mrs DSL's car to get it back to the way she likes it, clean with road tyres! Re the low mpg, I reset the trip at the start so that is just off roading. Mossy's V8 got 3.6mpg, again trip reset so just off roading. Here's a better one but I ran out of downhill coasting!
