I installed the Baben supplied TorqTune box a few weeks ago on my 08 D3 S with 15 000 km on the clock. Thanks to Deondef and DiscoEast for supplying a series of pictures which highlighted where to plug the unit into the wiring loom . Believe me there are lots of plugs at the back of a D3 After impatiently waiting for the motor to cool down, which takes about 2 hours, I unplugged the old wiring harness using two long screwdrivers - one to hold the plug retaining clip down and the other used to pry off the plug. The new branch splitter cable was then plugged in and the cabling routed to avoid all those hot pipes at the rear of the engine - and there are lots of them I installed the TorqTune box in the main battery box as a 12 V supply is required to power the unit and my ancillary battery is a National Luna box system in the boot of the vehicle. There is plenty of space to tuck the small unit in front of the battery. Using an old radio controlled model aeroplane trick, I wrapped the box in latex foam which substantially reduces the vibration on the unit and hence protects it much better. The whole job took about half an hour, but most of this time was spent routing (and cable tying) the cable away from hot areas of the engine. All in all, an easy job once you know where to plug the thing into the wiring loom.
The TorgTune box for the D3 only has one programme installed although the manual (a one-pager ) indicates that four programmes can be selected based on various programme jumper settings. Within the one programme you have seven user selectable power settings from LOW to HIGH. These are given nominal performance values of -3 to +3 in the manual. What this is based on is anyone's guess Is the 0 setting the existing vehicle's programme or something else
Well enough about the installation side and onto more interesting things like the PERFORMANCE.
To start with I decided to throw caution to the wind and set the jumper on +2. I started the engine and all seemed fine. By the way, the RED LED on the unit comes on when the system is working. A quick drive around our residential area comfirmed that the power levels were very good.
Over the next two weeks I ran the vehicle on the +2 setting and I am amazed at the power I get out of the engine. Pull-offs are extremely quick and one is forced back into the seat. This is amazing considering the D3 is a 3.2 Ton monster. One just needs to gently push the accelerator and the vehicle rockets along - VERY IMPRESSIVE . Surprisingly the fuel economy does not seem to have suffered as I still get around about 11.4 litres/100 km in mixed driving situations.
This weekend I decided to stop being the Little Boy Racer and to retard the power setting to -3, which is the lamest setting available. Surprisingly the vehicle still perfoms well but the extreme power is no longer there. This is however still a good setting for the weekly commute. It is still too early to see what effect the lowest jumper setting has on fuel economy.
I can HIGHLY recommend the unit as it greatly increases ones enjoyment of driving the vehicle. My only gripe is that very little information is supplied with the unit about the different power settings. Maybe Baben can DYNO test a D3 with the TorqTune disabled and then compare the power and torque results after running through all the jumper settings - SOME WORK FOR YOU BABEN

Nice report, thanks Doc. And thanks for the feedback on the manual etc. To be a true "DIY install" we need to get the manual a bit more informative, especially for those guys with more thumbs than normal (not pointing fingers or anything, excuse the pun )
I like your idea about the dyno testing. Maybe we should make an outing of it, and see who has the most powerful D3 in town? ( I think I already know the answer though, and its a blue one with big tyres.... )
TBH, I did do some testing with my G-tech (http://www.gtechpro.com) which is a fairly scientific way of testing, for a couple of installs, so I know what the 0-100 times are pre- and post-tune. The unit calculates PS if you input the weight of the car, but we never bothered, seeing as the other values were so hugely different.
A couple of other users have posted (and will post JJ....!) their experiences with the tunes and reduced fuel consumption, so again there is data to support the claims there.

Baben has gratefully "lent" me a a TTbox to try out for a couple of weeks. I thought the first one was faulty as I did not experience any significant improvement in the performance. I had the second one in during my latest trip and consumption increased, but again not much improvement.
I recenty drove Baben's and Heine's vehicles and my impression is that my stock standard D3 pulls off faster from standstill - Heine has admitted this, Baben has yet to admit
At the top end the other two vehicles definetely has more oomph. My very first driving impression of the D3 is the turbo lag on pull off as well as lack of immediate acceleration from very low speed.
So - for the time being I am happy with standard D3 - who knows, when fuel pressure problem is sorted maybe I get even better performance
I think dyno testing could be very interesting - the LROC have these outings every now and then at SAC - at no charge for members - maybe if we go as a group we will get some discount - maybe placing a couple of bets on predicting the outcome could make it even more interesting Erstwhile - D3 S '07. Deon, I am up for a drag anytime , and will happily put a case of Zamalek on the outcome of a fair test your car (or any standard) vs mine on the dyno or on the road. Remember that you tested my vehicle with the following accessories fitted that would make pull-away (and braking) much slower as well:
STT tyres - add 40kg unsprung mass (10kg extra per tyre compared to standard)
Rear wheel carrier - add 80kg (included the wheel/tyre at 10kg extra)
Second fuel tank - add 140kg (probly more, as it was full)
Roof rack - add 30kg (unless yours was on, can't remember)
Drawer system - add 70kg
so we have a difference of somewhere like 300kg depending on what your BFG's weigh, which is substantial enough (10%, mind you!) to make a difference in take-off.
If you want to compare fairly, I can install my road wheels, take out the extra stuff (except the fuel tank, but I will empty it), and then feed you some smoke, buster!
On the SAc front, I am not sure they would welcome me with open arms, as I may be seen as competition, but I honestly do refer a lot of people their way ("can you help me with fuel injection/turbo/exhaust?"")
Who knows the guys there? Can we try set something up? If so I will bring my TT kits if they allow it

Hey Deon I cannot believe that you did not notice a performance improvement with the TTBox Did you have the 12V wire connected to the battery I think I remember you saying on the phone that it was disconnected on your vehicle.
On another issue - Heine and Baben, who the hell is ALICE

Deon's loom was the 5v version, which does not have or require the battery connection. THe 12v version is for the latest engines, which have a particulate filter, and is also backward compatible, hence this is the new "standard". There are no 2 ways about it - his vehicle has a problem which existed prior to any of this.

The Table below is the tally of my fuel consumption since fitting the little box. This is about 6 weeks worth of driving .with the box connected there is a definite increase in grunt and that little flat spot on acceleration is greatly reduced. I tried to drive as consistently as possible and not bias the readings. There is no high speed driving. Speed limits adhered to. The last week of driving I have been accelerating harder than normal and enjoying the d3. I have not noticed abnormalities in the vehicles behaviour .I think some dyno tests would be good to do. D3 was bought in May 2007.

Hi Atacama
Did you calculate the fuel comsumption yourself at each fuel fill or did you use the litres/100 km display on the dash The reason for asking this is that I have notice the display under reads by up to 2 litres/100 km D3 2005 HSE V8 model, snorkel, nudge bar, uprated tow hitch (12T), Goodyear Wrangler MTR (MT) tyres, National Luna battery box, Outback roof-rack, Takla seat covers.
