Re: Cable in lower door half operates the latch for upper ha

Me thinks that you replaced the correct part if the problem was that the upper window would not unlatch.
Actually, doing the emergency opening procedure from within the car, the upper door did unlatch, but only half way, as I didnt have SWIMBO pulling the upper door as I preformed it. Stupid me didnt read carefully enough to get this point before ordering and "fixing" the lower part... There is no sound when I press the button on the upper door, but the lock motor runs doing the EOP.
Well, now I know what to do IF the cable breaks/pops out. But next time I will wear kevlar gloves not to f**k up my hand again...
On the bright side- ordered a new rear door handle assy, and at the same time ordered an ladder I can fit at the same time! Long overdue!

Thanks for all of the information gents, much appreciated.
Had my latch cable fail right at the bend of the "L" ferrule that's swaged to the end of the cable. Happened yesterday morning and was fixed by yours truly later that day when I got back from work, took about an hour. I reattached the cable using cable-ties which will hold for a while - I left the tailgate trim off. At the weekend I'll swage a new loop of wire for a permanent fix.
Once again thanks to the Disco 3 gurus.2006 LR3 SE-7 Zermatt Silver

Tail lift jammed - broken cable end at actuator
My taillift jammed shut today too on my 07 HSE!! Actuator and switch working but broken cable end at the L shaped section!! Big thanks to jdea for his link to the Land Rover Tech Services Bulletin....made accessing the latch and opening the taillift a doddle - without too much damage either. Off to the dealers tomorrow to order a replacement cable / latch. A really poor design!!

Thanks for all the info guys, I replaced the cable in mine this week and it went like a dream (second time around). My first solution was not very successful, lasted only 3 openings. Second time around I made a cable loop and joined it to the existing cable using a "electric cable joiner" (plastic covered copper block with two screws) and this seems to be working well.
Thanks once again

How many of these failures before LR does a recall?
Symptoms: The actuator sounds but tailgate does not open.
So the "L shaped thingy" almost certainly needs to be replaced.
Sunday it will be done, thanks to the generous advice on this forum.

When it happened to me last year the dealer in Chichester quoted me £120 to fix the tailgate.
I thought this was pricey, so I went to a local "Land Rover" specialist in Littlehampton to save some money... He handed me back the car with a square section cut out of the back lower panel section and stuck with black duct tape, and a higher bill than the dealer's quote! Don't I ever learn???
At least I can just pull the tape off if it ever happens again...

happened our 07 se at week end. wasnt sure what it was till i read replies on this topic. some great advice given by all. i didnt bother the knives to lift rear tailgate edging, i went straight for the gorilla pry bars and they worked a treat. then used screwdriver to release carpet from poppers and with a bit of force freed the carpet along the top edge. i feel that the full length of the top edge of the carpet freed was required to gain sufficient access to the inspection gap to tailgate release mechanism. having located the broken wire i was able to pull on the wire without the aid of pliers and free the top half of the tailgate. repair was similar to lohr500 posted 19-11-010:
1) Took the metal innards out of an electrical connector block ( Those square insulated block type connectors with two cable holding screws).
2) halved it and inserted broken end of cable into block and tightened screw. dont overtighten screw or it will strip.
2) positioned the cable end in its location in the actuator arm.
3) put 2nd half of block on top of exposed part of cable end on left most side of actuator arm. this acts as a clamp against first half of block and keeps cable end insitu.
4) used "genuine land rover cable tie" around 2nd block to keep all in place.
5) tested solution loads of times, 3 goes at a time then wait 10 seconds. any more than this cuts out for operation of actuator for 1 min. fix is working well.
6| as a precaution against future failure i attached fine wire to release cable and fed it to rear tailgate edging, where i tucked the end under rear tailgate edging. a pull on this wire releases the top half of the tailgate from inside, at any time, if need be.
to be honest a balls of a design.FIRE IT UP

£90 including parts and VAT from main dealer. They've fixed loads of these. Done as a while you wait job in half an hour.
