There was one other person who needed a new engine, out of warranty & LR stumped up half of the money ISTR.
I've never heard this happen to a Jap/Korean/German/Czech/French/Spanish/Malaysian/American manufacturer, so it must be 'because it's british'..... Bodsys Brake Bible

Cat amongst the birds!
Possibly a bit strong, but having had bloody German cars for so long that have all done 150k+ I am a little 'disapointed'!
Will be in touch with LR, but at £6.5k plus vat (off the top of the service guys head) I may well end up with a second hand unit put in by an indie.
Will let you know what unfolds.......
Cheers

mercedes engine failure whilst driving - innocenti66
got to mercedes before they opened today yet they looked at it last night and tell me its a failed crank sensor............................what is this and how do they work ?
also are they prone to failure and could the failure be due to electrical interference ?????
what sort of money is a crank sensor for the part ?
how long would it take to replace ?
labour 20 hours book time
even at full up retail price i can only get to £4.5k
If you have full dealer service history and low mileage give LRCS a call....TLO has left the building.......

Thanks for all the comments so far. For the record, i'm not 'really' suggesting it failed because it's british...... Believe it or not, i'm an enthusiast of the brand too. I feel exceptionally strongly about supporting JLR in the current climate and would of been even more disgusted with our goverment if they hadn't supported it through these difficult times.
Regardless, I am left with a 2.7 tonnes of junk at the moment! 90 odd days out of warranty!! The dealer is being very helpful and is in the process of contacting LR to see what they say. The last service before I bought it was at a non LR dealer, which I imagine won't help my cause much.
TLO, thanks for the numbers, they are very expensive on labour and are quoting just over £6.5k for a recon unit fitted (inc vat) and oil etc etc. Will have to wait and see what LR come back with next week, hopefully a substantial goodwill gesture? The reason I didn't take a warranty was it sounded very expensive (over £1k) and I just couldn't imagine how I would recoup it, I now know!
I hope they are prepared to play ball, it really would leave a very bitter taste if they don't. Not to mention a large hole in my wallet.....It has only done 37k after all.
Cheers

It might pay to get an independant inspection and report by the RAC or AA?

After the EU block exemption rule changes a few years back, it doesn't have to be serviced at a main dealer to keep the warranty in tact, just serviced to manufactures spec and service intervals. (and at a VAT registered place, so have you got the service receipt)
Push LRCS hard yourself.

Problem is it is out of warranty. LR (and other makers) are more helpfull if you have had it serviced by a dealer. But if it was only an oil change then I cannot see the problem, unless it was the wrong oil.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Sorry to hear this. Unlimited mileage warranty is strange in these situations isn't it All my old D3's faults - (not including paint) were at higher mileage than this failed engine - and I got full warranty cover on everything, however this is 90 days out of warranty and has done very low mileage - but is not covered.
Guess they have drawn their line in the sand with time over mileage. Hope you get a good outcome "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."
