So... I have been looking at the new Kia Sportage Diesel.
Yes.. i know it's not a Landy and cannot pull 3500kg nor go off dirty roads.. but for what i do these days it would be perfect.
And.. it comes with a 5 year unlimited km warranty.
So how come LRA only give us 3 years and 100,000k on a car that costs twice as much?
If like me your business has taken a hit in the past few years under Kaptain Kev and Co.. then the thought of knowing your operating costs for 5 years has a lot of positives in it.
And adding in the much lower lease costs to boot!
Lease the vehicle over 4 years and it will still be under warranty when you roll it over.
Has to be a plus!
Anybody want a slightly used SE V6 petrol.. under 80,000 K

I guess you don't go offroad much!
The first Sportage at least had low range, not bad off road as you could manoeuver around most obstacles.
New one looks great, they are getting much better at designing cars. But oh well another softroader SUV not a 4WD in a true sence.
Good Luck to you Mark you won't have to go to the dealer very often! 2014 SDV6 HSE White, LLAMS Height Controller, Tinted Glass, Tuff Ant Sliders and 18" steel wheels, Safari Snorkel, Rhino Rack Platform, ARB Air Compressor, Custom Drawer and storage unit -http://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64 UHF CB, 4x4 Intellegence RWC, 120ltr Long range tank, Rock Sliders and Compressor protection plate Beanie grill, De Tango.

Yes.. I don't go off road much these days. At the tender age of 57 I am now enjoying a second round of childhood on a big trail bike. Just loving exploring all the old back roads and camping out sometimes on the bike.
I love the D3.. magic to drive. Just cannot live anymore with its reliability issues. Have a friend with a Range Rover.. he told me that on the first day he owned it the rear view mirror dropped off. He added... "They're designed that way so you cannot look out the back and see the trail of bits that fall off the car".
He actually warned me (along with others) not to buy the car.. but back in 1974 I bought a new Series 3 SWb and loved it. Then you dealt with Leyland Australia for any issues and I found them to be great.
Lease expires in December.. need to have the front end repaired first and while it's in the shop I'll get a full unbiased (non dealer) report on the general condition of the car and use that information to make my final decision. It's done around 77K.. who knows... it might get to 100k without needing a new diff/transmission/air suspension compressor/EPB unit.
I guess the thing that really amazes me (and cheeses me off at the same time) is the way everybody from LRA to the dealers to other owners just think these issues are normal.
If they were aeroplanes and not cars, then CASA wouldn't allow them in the air.
Cheers

Looking at replacing mine.
Have testdriven the Challenger and Pathfinder. Both felt rough and basic. Engines were noisey and had to work hard.
A big come down from the D3. We are spoilt by the ride and comfort of the D3.
Seriously looking at keeping the D3 getting rid of the Golf., using it for more serious off road work. Making the Challenger/Pathfinder as the second car.
Not sure I can live with the Jap crap so may get a D4 maybe wait for as few months and get a second or demonstrator MY10. At least I now know what to look out for.
At least the transmission will be fixed before the extended warranty runs out on the D3. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Yes.. we have thought of keeping the D3 as a "second - use only on weekends car" but that would mean replacing the better half's BMW Z4 with some sort of other daily driver.
At present the D3 is the daily driver and the Z4 is the weekend in the country get away freedom machine.
Will let you all know the outcome in December.
Cheers

Have worked in the car industry for nearly 10 years now and very prominent people in the industry working for brands that offer 5 year warranties have stated that the 5 year warranty has "saved the badge, as no-one would buy the product otherwise" bet they must have some warranty dollars put aside.
Also have a colleague managing a large Kia dealership who made the comment to me that he has never seen parts cost so much on a car before, and he has managed Ford, Nissan, Toyota and Landrover dealerships.
Doesn't matter who the manufacturer is if they can get out of paying for something.....they will try.
As for thinking the Kia would be more reliable.......think CARNIVAL!!!

Yes.. KIA Carnivals had a lot of problems.. but now KIA are part of Hyundai and share common platforms. That may make them better. Years ago in 89 I bought a SAAB 900 Turbo. My friends told me I was mad.. SAAB reliability and all that.
Well apart from the wiper linkage failing at 120K all was fine. Was at the doctor today. He bought a new D4 and drove it home from the dealer to have his engine warning light come on.. flat top truck back to the dealer for a day.
When I left after my appointment I got the "Hill Descent Control not available" message at start up. Weird hey? Did a restart and it's gone.
Lovely car to drive, ride in.... but these days I am watching the repair bills!
Anyhow folks.. I'l make a decision in December.
Cheers

Well, to get back on the topic.....
I took the car back to the dealer today so they can give it another go. They kept it all day and when I finally picked it up, they said "all OK now and nothing to pay sir.. all covered under extended warranty" she said with a smile...
I left the dealer at 5pm and went home via a mates place. Upon leaving my mates place at 5:30pm, I got the dreaded "F" fault again!!! what a joke...
Another wasted day.... Tomorrow I write to the dealer principle to see if I get some action...
Let's see what their excuse will be now...?? What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

I read the posts still, and beleave the Disco is at the forefront of technology, but now I just love the reliability of Tojo, 20,000 km , two trips to the Centre and not a fault, In the same time frame when I had the D3 it had been back to the stealer five times with serious faults. I take my hat off to you LR owners for what you put up with.
But realy if LR could get reliability up with the best of them I would have one again.
I think now that Tartra own LR they should get production out of UK, because that is where most of the problem is.
Oh well thats my two peneth worth.
Cheers

Hi there guys and in particular MobyOne.
Now I have some good news for you MobyOne having had a number of issues with LRA and a 2006 D3, one of which is still ongoing and which I am currently pondering writing again to LRA as it is yet another Land Rover known defect which for the most part is replaced automatically under warranty - the dreaded "Low Coolant Level" message due to porous float valves in the Coolant Reservoir.. In fact when the first issues arose which were quite early in the life of the vehicle and which had already had two power steering racks replaced I asked LRA nicely to both fix the problem and also guarantee the work and they refused. At that stage the vehicle had done under 20,000 km. Anyway, we had an argument and went to VCAT and in general things have been more or less OK since.
Now the good news MobyOne is that you live in Victoria and you are covered for defects which constitute having been sold a vehicle [or repairs thereto] which were not "of merchantable quality" under the Fair Trading Act for up to 6 years from the date of purchase. Note that this is separate from the "warranty" and indeed overrides LRA trying to weasel out of defect issues up to the 6 year mark. Now minor issues are not going to be worth fighting but the definition of goods not being of "merchantable quality" and liability for substandard workmanship in general terms are contained here
http://www.accc.gov.au/content/index.phtml/itemId/815360
I also deal with MLR [not Malvern] and from a performance point of view can not speak highly enough of the guys down at Port Melbourne in general terms. The service manager in particular is excellent as are most [not all] of his staff one of whom told me blatant .
So, with that back ground, I suggest that you go back and discuss it with the Service Manager. You have been charged to fix the problem that is not fixed. It is no longer your problem so they might like to give you an equivalent loan vehicle while they solve the issue. They will probably refuse but if you like to PM me I will tell you the next two steps. Can I suggest in the meantime don't get het up as The Fair Trading Act is pretty powerful.
I have to say that I was bitterly disappointed with LRA though overall although if you look back at Freelander Engine issues from years ago the ACCC in fact advised owners that while it appeared there was a problem they [ACCC] could not take the cases but the individual owners needed to themselves. None did and yet it, like my case, appeared pretty clear cut that LRA and Land Rover England were totally in the wrong. You might be interested in this link also as it appears to be a habit.

VR
ps, Added later. I should add that I have a very simple view of life. If something is manufactured wrong then it is the suppliers problem and wear and tear and useage is my expense entirely. Unfortunately LRA seem to have an attitude of attempting to avoid liability almost at any cost and ultimately it costs them good will and more than simply acknowledging and fixing the issues in the first place would have done. The D3 is a great machine so when we went to VCAT the Member dealing with the issue was astounded when he assumed that I was extremely unhappy with the vehicle and found that I loved the vehicle, just wanted one that didn't have defects.
