Do you pay for software updates? Dealer rip-off?

Had the 75K service done about 2 months ago. I mentioned to dealer that I had about 3 or 4 typical "suspension" & "F" faults at start-up durng the last 6 months, so they said they would check them out.

Upon collection they said they cleared the faults and the car needed a "software update". They charged me $120 for update and said that updates are not free. Very strange as I don't recall paying for any updates under normal warranty. Dealer told me that updates are now not covered under normal warranty.. and the D4 costs about $200 for software update.

My car is out of warranty (2005) but I have extended warranty through Allianz. Dealer said that Allainz would not cover software updates, and this was confirmed by Allianz. In fact Allianz confirmed that they do not cover any type of adjustment, cleaning or repair of parts, but will happily pay for replacement of parts. Mental note: " All parts are now to be replaced... not repaired or adjusted as in the case with my volume control swicth which on the steering wheel which needed "contacts cleaned".

Ok, so I now come to the real problem. After having my car back from the dealer for 1 weeek, I get the "F" fault back again. Back to dealer and they confirm that I really need a new battery. So they charge me $280 for new battery plus $50 for diagnotics to determine the fault again. I paid and once again not covered under warranty.

It's now been 4 weeks since the new battery and I have logged 3 new "F" faults. These all happen at start-up (so engine & Trans cold). I am logging the details and am ready to go back to dealer with a piece of my mind, as I feel ripped off that I had to pay twice for diagnostics and software updates when clearly they haven't resolved the problem. Chances are that my old battery was fine as well.

Any ideas? BTW dealer is ULR Malvern...
Cheers

I would try another dealer. Seems a lot for the time it would have taken.

You should only pay for the labour to install it... Half an hour should be enough. Maybe they charge $240 P/h

Thats outrageous. I would outright refuse to pay for a update due to a fault from LR.

Go to another dealer and ring LR Australia and complain.

Good luck ringing Land Rover here in Australia.Once your car is out of warranty they simply don't want to know you.

My D3 is the most unreliable car I have ever owned.

Tired of talking to LRA..

Here's the list:

Front suspension repairs next.. new lower control arm bushes and steering rack..... It's only money.

I mean the car has done 75,000K... it can't last forever.

Lets see.....

1.Front diff

2.Back diff

3.Auto tranny

4.New Battery

5.New windscreen - auto light sensor bracket incorrectly mounted to glass.

6.New electronic park brake

7.3xair suspension compressors

8.New rear seat mounting brackets

9.New radiator expansion tank

10.Short in fog light wiring

11.Tailgate electric door lock replaced

12.New tailgate door seal

13.New A/C servo motor

14.new electronic dipping rear view mirror

15.new front suspension ball joints

The first car I ever owned was a $300 POS mini. Even it was more reliable than this Land Rover.

It's lovely to drive, it's comfortable and brilliant off road.... but Censored it's an expensive mistress.

Land Rover just think you will go away if they ignore you long enough. And the dealers just smile at you and tell you these events are normal... how would you like to pay for that repair?

Good luck.

Dont get me wrong... my D4 has had a list of problems too...

1. Drivers Speaker cracking
2. Rear washer jet, need replacing
3. Gear Box seal on the torque converter needed replacing
4. Power steering leaked, seal replaced
5. O ring came off a pipe and went into the fan.
6. Fan replaced due to chucks taken out when hitting pipe
7. Gear stick selector replaced
8. B Pillar seat belt spring replaced
9. Terrain Response drops after restarting the car. - Still not fixed
10. Hand brake light beeps on start up - Still not fitted
11. Seat does not hold position - Replaced part, but still not fixed
12. Suspension Fault came up on the weekend... need to get fixed

I am sure there is still more problems i have forgotten....

I just hope its all fixed soon!

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am going back to dealer to complain about the "f" fault re-apearing and won't be offering any more $$ that's for sure.

Reading some of your issues, i think I have been lucky. In 5 years of ownership I've only had minor things go wrong that were all fixed by dealer whilst at service or next day. It's never left me stranded (maybe just plain dumb luck)??

Thumbs Up

Depends on the colour of your D3. Shocked Is it a shade of yellow?
Mine has been a bit of dirty yellow, Mark's looks like a bright shade of lemon. Whistle

Yes.. you are right.. mine's Buckingham Blue.. but in reality it's a bright shade of Lemon.

The 2 differential replacements.. a bit of digging around on the internet and I find that the diff breathers can be blocked from the factory. This causes the diffs to pressurise and slowly force oil out past the seals. Now it does take a while.. so you would think that when the car has its regular service, that the mechanics would notice the oil levels dropping when they check both diffs. I mean they tick the box on the service invoice saying that they have checked the diffs....

Also the control arm bushes. Put it in for a wheel alignment at 73k and they ring to tell me that the control arm bushes & tie road ends are flogged out. Mine had a (time based) service at 66k. Again they ticked the boxes saying front suspension and steering checked. Surely if the bushes were flogged out at 73k.. then they were flogged out at 66k?? They also told me it needed the brakes doing. Well a close look shows at least another 20,000k left on the pads.. perhaps even 30,000!

I have now made the decision to take my car away rom Austral's service dept and go to Knights House of Rover. He has a shop full of D3s and most of them are there to have their suspension bushes replaced. So my question to Land Rover, to Australs and to the forum members is this: How can a "Premium Vehicle" (Land Rover's words) have flogged out its suspension in only 70K? I mean it is not a Great Wall Motor's product. In 1987 I bought a new Skyline Silhouette and in 4 years and 400,000k it threw out a clutch at 300k and a steering rack at 350,000k.

I have asked Knights House of Rover to go right over the car and give me a list of what is falling off and what needs replacing. Then I will decide if I will pay the lease out when it ends in December and keep it... or go down the cheap and cheerful Korean 5 years warranty track. I am so over the D3 and Austral's service department.

My wife has a BMW Z4 roadster.. 5 years old now (from new) and has had one switch replaced under warranty. That's it. In 1998 I bought a new ford Festiva.. $13990 drive away. Under warranty they replaced the ashtray when the lid fell off. Drove it for 4 years and 80,000 and only replaced a battery and tyres.

What is it with Land Rover and more importantly their customer service approach???

Sorry to bitch about it guys but after having paid around $2500 for an extended warranty that won't cover the bushes but did cover the auto when it failed (even though I was complaining about it while still under LRA warranty) and now being asked to fork out another $2500 by Australs some 7 months later... i feel I have been screwed over and hung out to dry.

If the software updates were a general improvement to give better functionality, I would expect the dealer to request my permission before installing them and agree a charge. If the software updates were required to repair a deficiency in the original software, I'd regard this as a latent defect and refuse to pay.

Very Happy Rimini Red
