I took my car into the local Dealer yesterday afternoon so that its smoking habit can be recorded before the Manufacturer's warranty expires in a few weeks time.

They have just contacted me to say that LR have told them that they are not doing anything more with the turbos (as has been posted on here before), because there will be a permanent fix within the next four weeks.

Fingers crossed.

Update: Puntland have two D4 customers with this problem; and a FFRR 4-litre where it is known to be a problem, they say. Ouch!

I am heading for a couple of thousand miles on the continent soon and gave them a backstop date to get it fixed before I go and to their credit they have fessed up with the necessary part to fix it.

This is apparently a "modified pipe" which they will fit on Friday.

Here's hoping it does fix it ...

Had pipe fitted to mine 2 years ago, did improve things but did not cure totally, pipe has some sort of one way valve to try to stop oil pooling and as I said does make an improvement.

I have only just come across this thread.

I have had my car a few months and as soon as I bought it I came across a topic of a D4 smoking on startup -
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic76396.html?highlight=smoking
As I had seen smoke once I thought I may have the same problem but can't say I've noticed any since so appear to be free of this one.

However as I have been driving the car I have noticed the problem detailed in this thread and had wondered if it was normal - obviously not Crying or Very sad
I normally drive the car fairly steady and just enjoy the experience (compared to my work runabout) but on occassions when I've had to floor it, although it goes like a scalded cat with little hestitation to speak of, there is definately a cloud of smoke chucked out of the back.

Seems there is some link to the other thread based upon actions taken/bits changed by LR to try and stop the smoke.

I've not noticed a drop in oil level although must admit I've not checked since I returned from holiday where I covered approx 1000 miles, mostly pulling the tintent.
I will check the level tonight and will be sure to mention it when it goes in for its next service, next month.

It's reassuring to know that others have similar experience Bow down

Just been and collected mine. It was only gone overnight, but it was great to get back in it! I've been asked to give the Dealer a ring when we get back from holiday to see if there's any update.

With regards to oil consumption, I checked it yesterday and it was still at maximum (being serviced next Monday so not needed a top up at all since I've owned it). As a learned colleague on this forum suggested, it only needs a tiny bit of oil to make a lot of smoke.

It was nice that the car had been valeted considering it's not had any work done on it. One for the Nottingham Dealer. They must have had a change at the top since I last used them. Thumbs Up

Checked my oil level tonight and it has dropped by one mark on the scale which seems rather a lot in about 2k miles but not sure what that equates to volume of oil lost Question
Is this normal for this type of engine as I am used to cars with little to no oil loss between services Sad

Sorry to say this, but I was told of a permanent fix being 'weeks away' by Land Rover HQ around this time 2 years ago...

I can't believe people are still having problems. I genuinely thought, as a not frequent visitor on here, the problem had been cleared up 1+ year ago. As I said, my driving style is identical with my new engine, and it - fingers crossed - has not smoked at all. In many ways I am pleased my engine went bang so catastrophically as it got rid of the problem and while I lost my car for 2 months, it came back fully fixed.

Hi 747_JK - Does your new engine use/burn any oil ie do you need to top it up between service intervals Question

The last few cars I have had have all used some oil. Ford Galaxy's and Citron C8 all did, so have all the LRD3's and D4's. None have used much but all a little. Think it is the way engines are now.

Hi Russell. It's had oil on a pre-holiday maintenance check at the dealer, but the top up bottles I have in the boot remain untouched. Hope your new motor is running well.

I would not like to say what is right or excessive, look behond the filler cap flap, it states there that the oil should be checked a fairly low mileage intervals so I think that tells a story.
As for my D4's. the old one was very erratic in oil usage, anything from nothing over a six month 5000 mile period to a litre in a month 1000 miles!!!!! As a result I religiously checked it on a weekly basis.
The new D4 has now done about 8000 miles and I recon it will need about 1/2 litre of oil within the next 1000 miles.
I would keep eye on it and top up as required, if not happy with amount talk to your dealer.

Hi 747_JK

I see what you're saying but I have been privvy to a bit of information that does suggest that the fix may be imminent this time. I have been asked to keep details of this to myself, but hopefully it will resolve the issue once and for all in the near future. Whilst the date I have seen relates to the fix for the TDV8 (same problem), I can't imagine the TDV6 will be far behind.

Nigel.

My smokey motor has gone in to Puntland for its 3rd visit for this issue today, to have the pipe fitted.

I have seen the pipe, it is a Jaguar part, number C2Z9795 made in the Czek Republic. It is about 8 inches long, about 3/4 inch in diameter, bent about 90 degrees in the middle, with a crenelated zone (concertina effect) around the curve, pale grey alloy, with a flange on each end, one being oval with two bolt holes and one being pear shaped with one bolt hole. I did not spot a one-way valve. A google search says it is a Jaguar Tube Drain.

There was also what appeared to be a blanking plate, oval with two bolt holes.
List price is about £30.

What are the chances that this will fix the problem?
