A pipe keeps freezing in winter so I pour warm water over it to de ice it...
Really it needs lagging instead of warm water pouring over it but it has the same effect to me, water comes out the other end doesn't it.... FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner
Test piloted a new D4 XS SDV6.. Gone and being forgotten i hope!!

Yes you would have a small design issue if your pipe keeps freezing
Therefore the plumbers mod would be to lag the pipe which stops the problem = no more problem
If you just pour warm water over it the problem will keep coming back so you have not stopped the problem
I think we will have to agree to disagree on this one!!!

An update for anyone else with theses symptoms.
Explained problem to dealer who was aware of problem but not the fix.
Credit to them that they found the LR bulletin and have ordered in the bits which are on back order with LR due to demand

So has anybody nailed down what MY D4's are susceptible to this problem? is it more of a TDV6 thing rather than SDV6?

Mine's in at the Dealer this week. I took it in on Monday for the modification to be carried out, and later got a call saying that they were sending the intercooler off to be properly cleaned as it seems the oil had got that far! Not heard anything since. We're going near to Carlisle tomorrow for the weekend, and was hoping to go in the D4, but looks like we'll be "slumming" it in my Dad's FL2 instead! Ah well............

Surely that would call for a new intercooler, not send the old one to be cleaned?

If your trying to sort the smoking on the TDV6 D4 then good luck both myself and Russell had a horrendous time
I tried everything Mod pipes / different fuels / new turbos / inter cooler cleaned and exhaust cleaned
Over 10 months about with LR Technical which also included taking the body off to replace the turbos
In the end they offered to replace the engine or replace the car
4 weeks later I still had no response from LR
To which I exploded and sold my beloved D4 and bought an Audi
Shame I love the D4 but in 15 months of ownership I had multiple breakdowns and faults and a D4 that smoked like steam engine - could you imagine running it out of warranty !
I did start up a thread somewhere but removed most of my posts - not fair on its new owner
One thing I did notice when using the umpteen courtesy cars I drove was the SDV6 didn't seem to have the smoking issue
Mine was smoking from start up when left stood, not even cold start
Blue smoke bellowing out - can repost vids if required
I'm still of the opinion it's a valve related issue which is why LR wanted to swap my engine instead of taking the body off and fitting a new head - it was more economical to replace the engine
I remember Fords in the past having exactly the same issue
Stratstone at Bury we're very good and did as much as they could to sort the problem they know all about the issue cause my car was never out the place
LR Technical do not have a solution other than fit a new engine
Good luck guy's 2007 RS4 Avant

Why didn't you just accept a replacement? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

"4 weeks later I still had no response from LR

It shouldn't take this long when I paid £45k for the car
LR Techical didn't give 2 no matter how many times I rang
In the end they just wanted to strap me up with a new engine or replacement car with a spec I didn't want and tuning the finance to their advantage.
Which is why at the moment I won't buy another
It may have been just a one off but reading the forum again it looks like its still an issue
It wasn't just the smoking issue either
I had 7 breakdowns in 3 months
Shocking for a new car!!!! 2007 RS4 Avant

Hi Roylance,
The symptoms are slightly different to your car. Smoke is visable if you boot it, not on engine startup and it is intermittent and it seems appears only if the car is normally driven gently.
The new mod is hot off the press, definitely after you got rid of yours but perhaps it could have sorted your problem?
I have not noticed any smoke from mine since the mod but its early days

My car is just over 12 months old now and I noticed this for the first time yesterday, after gently warming the engine up I booted it on a dual carraigeway to overtake a tanker, there was slightly more lag than usual and then I noticed plumes of white smoke in my mirror. Not happened in almost 20,000 miles so I'm wondering if it was just clearing its throat and this is a one off?
