Getting the alarm to use the horns
Here's how to make the alarm system use the horns not the battery back up sounder.
This guide is for a RHD D3 for LHD everything is on the other side of the D3
1. open the bonnet and open the left hand box see pic
2. Locate the alarm sounder, its just behind the ABS module and to the left of the brake servo (It has volvo on it)
3. On the alarm sounder there's a plug with three wires coming from it. You need to disconnect this (see pic), It is fiddley and I used a small flat blade screwdriver to remove it. Then just tuck it away.
4. Once you have done the above the alarm system defaults to the horns.
To test lock the car give it 30 secs and then open the passengers door manually with the key this will set the alarm off.

Cool now I should be able to really pi** my neighbours off when the alarm goes of every 2 hours or so.

So what the is the pathetic sounder for
I thought it was a backup. But backup to me means if the battery is tampered with, then and only then does the system use the backup sounder.
Is this too simplistic If you wait for it to go wrong - it's bound to oblige

So on a UK car, the battery is on the other side is it?
Why change everything round under the bonnet like that? Surely a few extra lengths fo cable to the steering column wouldn't make that much difference.

Yes.... if we have it in the first place I can't check part numbers from my present location but i'm fairly sure that battery back up and tilt part number ends in 50, non battery and non tilt ends in 40...
That said, the choice is:-
Hear the alarm when someone attempts to break in (or you get a roof spider in the car) but live without a battery backed up sounder and tilt sensor (assuming you have these options in the first place)
Leave it as it is, secure in the knowledge that should some scroat with a 20 tonne crane manage to lift yer car off the drive or get in and chop the battery cables, that the alarm will still be merrily deafening precisely no-one
Yes, it's a crap state of affairs, probably down to some euro-meddling as I said, it's market specific, not model specific and I'm fairly sure that the UK market has the plain old sounder with no battery or tilt sensor

Ian,
It's a bit more than that, take both covers off and take a look
on the drivers side (whichever side that is) you have:-
ABS module and actuator
Brake servo & resovoir
steering column
On the passenger side you have:
Battery
BJB
Engine ECU
Another ECU (can't remember which )
To me, 'mirroring' everything over makes most sense...

Here some measurements:
1) surrounding sound of a quit environment WITHOUT traffic - only the distant rumour af a far away road (2km) and some dog barking (0,5km): +/- 45dB
2) disco Alarm going of: 70-75dB
3) Disco Alarm going of with the hood open and the plastic cover removed: +/-120dB
4) Disco horns +/- 105dB
It is clear that the alarm, max 75dB will not exceed the noice level in for example a city!
