Certainly not just D3's that are suffering with this, the one on my 57 plate transit was totally gunked up when i checked it today, the van is on 33k but it had a new one fitted at about 15k

On a more serious note, had a look at Hitachi's website just to see what availabilty might be like given events over there recently, I recon they'll be a supply chain shortage so get yer order in asap to yer local LR stealer, mine will be ordered first thing on monday coz with that amount of black mess, I can only guess at what the inside was like Whistle

First big run out (80 miles at an average speed of 61mph) saw me at 30.3mpg (indicated) for the first time since I got her. I messed with the trial by adding redex to a full tank for the first time too. Whatever, it's given me another 2.5mpg.

Mine was gunky on my non-blanked '56 D3. A quick clean and a drive out seemed to improve on the MPG by 1-2 ermmmm... MPG's! (although a couple of other things I did were more likely to help this)

Heres mine. Cars done 112 000km and not sure if its ever been cleaned. EGR's not blanked.

Not used additives or oil (in the diesel that is 8) )...

Looks like two types of gummed up MAP’s, some seem to have plenty of “goo” around them however the aperture appears to be clear, others like mine appear to have the aperture covered as well, possibly blocked ???

It’s not just a case of driving styles either; I drive mine in Sport mode quite a lot, also use command shift as well.

Maybe of use, if people could mention on this thread if they add fuel additives / 2 stoke oil etc.
I only use normal diesel (lots of it as well)

Hi Syd, I use standard supermarket fuel with a tank of V power every 4th fill up; no two stroke.

I have been wondering why the build up occurs.

Here are my assumptions:

    1. The build up occurs on vehicles with EGR's working, I.e. for those with blanked EGR's there should be no new build up.
    2. The MAP sensor is positioned just after the EGR's entry to the inlet manifold, hence its right in the firing line for any unburnt crap from the exhaust.
    3. It would not occur in the turbo housing as the temperature remains high, e.g. no condensate .

From what I can gather EGR's only operate at part throttle; True ?

Does anyone know what causes the EGR's to open ? Is this done on MAP pressure / load / throttle ?

Simon.

well after cleaning mine yesterday, performance was good from pick and more importantly, got 237 miles out of half a tank when towing all day long around the M25/A12 area.... so much so that I stuck another £30 in thinking that the sensor was knackered, now home with 438 miles completed on a full tank (give or take the 2/3rds of a quarter of the tank left by topping it up earlier). Thumbs Up

To be on the safe side, have ordered up another one before Hitachi run out, £116 before me discount Whistle

That's great, Thumbs Up I just wish the penny had dropped a while ago. I'd have saved a mini fortune since October when mpg went Pete Tong.

tell me about it, I recon it costs me around an extra £11-15 per fill up over the past "x" amount of months so in real terms £100's Shocked

Done this morning. 15 minutes.

MAP sensor not pleasant, but gunk not blocking hole. Gunk cleaned off. Hole squirted with brake cleaner. Replaced.

Set of 9 Torx offset keys (T10 to T50) that I bought a fortnight ago came in handy - £3.99 at TKMaxx Embarassed

Just completed 74.8 miles in 102 minutes and 27.1mpg (D3 computed) - not unusual for such a trip.

A
2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

Weird thing is my pic shows hole not bunged up but still good health improvement in pickup & mpg. Was wondering in that case of the oil/gunk affected the air flow past the sensor which affected it's operation. The blue O ring is well back so the gunk is in the air stream.
