Germany 2010 LR4 5.0 V8 HSE Auto Zermatt SilverLR4

Hi,

I think most of the people writing here have not seen the NEW XC90 - don't make the mistake to compare the old XC90 to the new one.

I like my Disco 4 and won't give it away - but as my business and daily car I have the new XC90 II D5 and end of the year it will be the Plugin-Hybrid T8.

Here a brief comparison with +/- to the Disco:
- XC90 has a lot more space inside for the second row
- the third row seats are more easily to fold
- it's easier to handle the 2nd row seats to get into the 3rd row
- the space behind the 3rd row is much much more (4 full boxes of beer possible)
- it is much quieter as my V8 Disco 4 (which is not loud!)
- the interior quality of the new XC90 is like Range Rover or above
- the usability ist perfect, modern and intuitive
- many many features are available which the Disco (and RR) do not offer
- modern design, not to sporty, quite elegant
- more luxury
- Volvo quality is much higher than LR - drove 16 Volvos in the last 15 years, ALL together didn't have a little part of the repair times my Disco 4 had alone in 4 years (which is only used 10.000 km/year)
- 30-40% less fuel consumption of the XC90 D5 to the Disco SDV6
- faster than the Disco SDV6
- no AdBlue needed as Disco MY2016
+ offroad capabilities can not be compared, Disco is a perfect offroader, XC90 remains SUV
+ Air Suspension, the Disco has a higher range
+ iconic design of the D4, but the D5 will be doubtful for me
+ higher trailer weight (2,7to to 3,5to)

It is very good, that I must not decide which of both I have to choose - I have both and will hold the Disco for offroad and caravanning. Wink

The Volvo XC90 is worth looking at the dealer if you won't use it offroad. For this, you should prefer the Disco.

So the Autocar report is quite realistic in my opinion.

Kind regards
gseum

It would be so cool if coming D5 would share some of the reliability of Volvo cars refinement with proper 4x4 capabilities of D3/4

The split tail gate on the D3/4 is of major importance to me, seriously!

I would have to agree about the split tailgate, whilst I do curse it on occasion trying to reach to the very depths of the boot, I wouldn't want to be without it.

If the roundel on the grille was removed, I'd mistake it for a Q-series Audi.

£62,500 is a lot of money for (even a large), road biased SUV/MPV, especially one that will revert to being the Chinese/Swedish oddball choice, once the launch frenzy has died Down.

I write as an ex Volvo driver, who has owned 3 new V70's in a row (from a family that has owned many, going back to '73!) and moved on to LR after their quality took a major turn south with the arrival of the V70 Series III in 2007. A funeral director client of mine ran a fleet of Volvo based limousines, hearses and company cars (being the default choice since the 80's) until around the same time and was so horrified by the same changes in quality, that he's been swapping to Mercs ever since.

Had a poke around one today and whilst it looked smart it didn't have the presence the D4 gives. Difficult to describe but I then walked of to a HSE Lux and it just looked the part turned back to the volvo stand and it didn't do it for me.

Practical side of things like others Split Tailgate i can't do without and I'm petrified LR will not keep it for the D5. I need to tow across fields in all weather and this isn't the right tool for that.

I find the split tailgate a bit of a PITA to be honest. I have long arms but still can't reach the back (front?) of the boot.

Thats a definite con but for me the pros out weigh the cons... getting the dogs in, sitting the kids on it to sort their wellies or whilst they finish their ice-cream, standing on it to get to the back of the roof box the list goes on.

A split tailgate is a major advantage for loading a heavy load, like a copier, between two people. There's no reaching into the boot, across the rear bumper, with the sides of the car getting in the way. Once it's on the split tailgate, preferably on a piece of cardboard, it can simply be slid towards the back seat.

Just as an aside to the thread....what's the load bearing capacity of the lower tailgate?

Last week we loaded a heavy concrete article into the car (took 2 people)and 'resting it' on that tailgate was a bit unnerving, as it creaked. Sad

England 2010 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 HSE Auto Marmaris TealDiscovery 4

I drove an xc90 today - following shortly after putting a deposit on a 2010 D4 HSE (which I found unexpectedly yummy to drive, hence deciding to buy it) I thought I would drive it even though there is no prospect of getting one

As context - my wife has had an xc90 for just under three years (2006 SE Lux). I have Subaru Outback 3.0 but replacing that v soon with D4 as mentioned

Just had a drive of D5 Momentum with 20 inch wheels. Grey paint, black leather interior, metal trim. Was showing 38mpg on trip but salesman was at pains to point out that was low for, all the local running around it had been doing - no idea what real world consumption is

Very disappointed with the tyre noise - reminded me of a BMW 330d I drove for four days late 2012 that gave me a headache - I think it is an unfortunate pitch of noise that I am susceptible to - nobody I gave a ride in the BMW 2.5 years ago knew what I was talking about and the salesman today said nobody had commented on tyre noise as being excessive. Must be just me then

Other points - like the space very much - more room than my wife's 2006 xc90 (decent boot space behind third row of seats - quite a bit better than previous xc90 - and lots of room in second row for passengers as well as front seats), faster in a straight line, nice steering, good round a roundabout - didn't feel particularly big to drive. The engine noise was a bit meh, but not really awful - neither good nor bad. A bit disappointed with the ride - not exactly bad but fairly firm and possibly a bit crashy.

The standard speed limit display is good - a mph sign (white circle with red surround) at bottom of instrument panel and a red line on the speedo - seemed confused by a 40mph temp limit on a dual carriageway though.

I don't like the metal trim either on the Momemtum I drove or the Inscription in the showroom (one was a mesh and the other smoother) - looked very good quality but I just didn't like it. Would be nice to see a wood alternative in a car rather than a small sample as on the showroom wall. The R Design sample looked quite nice

On the paint samples the bronze looks quite nice but best is the bursting blue, only available on R design (which I would never buy) - none of them as nice as the teal on "my" D4

The inscription had the blond interior - which is pale grey rather than blond, I would say. Didn't like that at all

I decided to get a D4 2010 with two year warranty rather than splash out on either a new xc90 or D4. Given that I want to waft about effortlessly the D4 suits me better - I would have to drive an xc90 with smaller wheels to see if the tyre noise was ok for me anyway - as it stands, because of that, I could not contemplate getting one despite its many positive points. Think I would prefer to get a new se tech D4 and add leccy seats than an xc90 and I think I would save money doing it (at least up front if not running costs)
