That was back in the immediate post WW2 days when roast chicken was a luxury reserved for high days and Xmas.
Rabbit, hare, squirrel, pigeon and the occasional crow or rook were quite common on our table.

Once they're given names, there's trouble dead ahead.

Over the past 19 years I must have tried most if not all of solid fuels for the multi fuel stoves that I've owned. I always go back to Homefire Smokeless. It's probably the most expensive, but lasts longer.
We burn a combination of wood and smokeless fuel, using more of the later when the outside temperature drops.

Agree with LT, I've tried most types of coal, but end up with smokeless - currently using 'Taybrite' burns well and long, and if I load the fire up before bed, then generally easy to get it going in the morning Iggy/Ieuan

Our stove (Clearview Vision 500) is very much a principle source of heat. It regularly runs 24/7. I put in some Homefire in the centre of the stove last thing at night, let it get up to temperature and then turn the stove right down. In the morning it's still glowing strongly, so I just riddle the stove, empty the ash tray, add more fuel and off it goes again.

Hi,
raised just off the ground, covered from above with plenty of air circulation front and rear, if you can build "bays" try one and see how you go, although you will end up with more bays you can then rotate which bay is In Use and which are Still Drying
Best to have a least One pile ready to use near the house

Bah humbug, got my first cold of the festive season.
But nobody can be uncheered by a log burner on an otherwise cold and miserable day.
