I say in the new disco 5 at Cambridge . Yes it did look nice but I thought build quality was poor and the interior trim was flimsy and cheap feeling.

seriously... we're getting excited about a cubby hole behind the dash !!!
funny I brought the dash cam thing up at the factory while we were there for the unveil, the reason they have not done that is apparently to do with legislation or fear of come back following an accident, ie it did not capture the accident so someone may try to hold this against LR..................MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

I spoke to my dealer the day after the launch evening and they confirmed they had more pre orders than they had had for any other model, he said it had massively out ordered the Evouque and the DS and more than the RRS but not by how much, did not mention the FFRMY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

Having seen it at my local dealer I have no doubt they will sell like hotcakes, as it is targetted at selling loads.
However I believe this undermines both the Discovery and Land Rover brands and the company has put the final nail in its long term coffin. This vehicle is not a 'Discovery' but just another blancmange to sell to the Chelsea Waitrose set, and is ideally designed for that.
As a replacement for one of the most capable vehicle concepts (IMHO) ever made, it is a disaster. LR have completely lost sight of what underpins their brand, and longer term I predict they will lose sales as they try to chase fads and fashions and become completely divorced from where LR has come from.
I told the salesman I take my Discovery abroad to off road across Europe as well as run around the UK and where are the recovery points? He couldn't answer that simple question, and mumbled something about what sounds like a road towing frame that fixes on the front. Oh dear. He then talked about SVO doing an off road version. So I have to pay a premium for an overpriced version to be able to have a trip to the Pyrenees?
Right now LR do not have a 'proper' off road vehicle in its range. By that I mean something you can be comfortable taking to remote parts and pull out of a hole.Tony

D5 is probably the best thing that they could have done for D4 sales!

It certainly brought my recent D4 purchase forward by at least 5 years!! As a 2.0, I can't see what advantage it gives over a DS. Having lost the compact dimensions, the low weight, the better fuel consumption, the better looks and lower cost of the DS, I can't see what it's given us in return, apart from some highly dubious additional "prestige".2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Yes Derek. I'm annoyed. I have been looking at late model low mileage D4's for some months and decided to hold off as I thought prices would fall when the D5 was launched.
However it is such a pile of that I think D4 prices will rocket as people who need a proper Discovery go and get D4's. And for some reason my local dealer's forecourt has loads of RR's and Evoques etc but no D4's which seems odd.Tony

They haven't put the final nail in their coffin, the opposite in fact, they are selling more than they have ever done. To LR as a business that's what matters, they aren't interested in the niche market anymore. Whether that's good or bad I don't know.
Take a look at LRs recent sales figures and you will find the D4 is 5th behind Evoque, DS, RRS and RR in 4th
In 2015-16 they sold 51,000 D4s worldwide and 22,000 Defenders.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

Personally, I think that until it becomes available to drive and the motoring press etc have had a chance to 'try it out' nobody apart from LR engineers, can say if its a 'proper' off-road vehicle or not. But I didn't buy my current D3 as an 'off-road' vehicle, I bought it primarily as a tow car as did many others I suspect.
I remember when the D3 was launched, all the old school motoring journalists kept saying that it wasn't a 'proper' Discovery as it didn't have a diff-lock etc, it had some stupid electronic traction control and therefore could never be as good off-road as the old 'proper' D1 & D2 cars, ............ really ?
Also bear in mind, that the Dealers haven't been on the factory 'familiarisation' course yet, so they know very little about the car, even the guys doing the Dealership presentation's couldn't answer all the questions. I look forward to actually getting one out on the road and driving it, 'the proof of the pudding' as they say
