not sure
I didn't want this D4 as between me and SWMBO I have bought 5x D3/4s over the last ten years and whilst absolutely love it really wanted something more modern. Had a FFRR on order (my dream car) but bottled it for my current D4 over practicality fears deciding to get one of the last D4's and look forward to the D5.
The plans gone some what "Pete Tong" now and I'm left with the D4 that I love and is so blooming brilliant it is in actual fact causing me a lot of angst. There is just nothing on the market to compare to the D4s all round class and capability.

Currently on LR product No10 a Discovery 4 HSE MY15 with lots of toys. Finding it really hard to put my name down for a Disco 5. Keen on the First Edition but downunder in Australia the prices are not out yet but found out via the backdoor the price is pretty high.
Seriously considering going to RRS HSE with some extras instead of a Disco. If I am going to may large amounts of $ I might as well go for something fun in a RRS.
Any input most welcome as although I have not sat in a Disco 5 or even seen it downunder there is something that does not sit right with me with the new Disco 5.

I can see why the XC90 would be serious competition for the D5 and why it's back in the running, but would you part with a year old D4 for one?
I'm not sure I would, if the D5 ain't to my liking after the test drive then the current one will stay at least until the elusive new Defender is announced.
I like the D5 but there is just something bugging me about it and I'm not sure what it is 23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I think we almost have perfection with the d4 which is what's causing some of the reactions and struggles. I'm desperately trying to stay positive and keep saying to myself it's a nice car (which it is). Talking to a bloke in the carpark on Sunday he wasn't blown away and we recalled when the D3 was launched we were totally blown away and simply had to have one - it ticked every box and was very exciting.
The d5 did not raise my excitement levels at all which is probably why I'm struggling a bit. It's a very expensive "meh".

This is my thinking too. When I attended the D3 launch many, many moons ago it was a truly groundbreaking design, the functional space was impressive, such that 7 full size (or oversize) adults could fit into it and ride in comfort. Getting into the 3rd row was relatively painless too.
I'm not sure what happens to the 3rd row occupants in a crash, as most certainly the electrics will fail, but even if they don't I can't see getting out in a hurry - waiting for the demented electric seat mechanism to move!

The first D3 I saw was a silver HSE, it looked like something that should be exploring the moon. I've always had a love for LR but the D3 was the first one that grabbed my attention, something that the D5 lacks.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

I'd never had any love for LR until I saw my first D3 when it launched at a motorshow (can't remember which one). It was something like we'd never seen before... outstanding design that looked tough and purposeful, but in a very handsome way. Some of the design subtleties, (subsequently lost on the D4), were pure genius. All my mates warned me about LR's reliability record but I just had to have one... it just looked right.
People keep saying the D5 will sell loads because it's more familiar to the yummy mummy BMW, Audi, Volvo target market... unfortunately, only time will tell us if LR are right. The main problem with pandering to fashion is what happens when it goes out of fashion? It just looks wrong.2005 D3 HSE 2011 D4 Landmark 2016 D4 HSE Lux

I'm also worried that if it is an attempt to conform to the normal expectation of large 4x4's nowadays then what happens when we have more issues (as you seem to do with LandRovers), surely we will all consider the most reliable, best screwed together jelly mound car to drive. I'm not seeing it the metal until next week but think from the comments so far, as well as the pricing that I'd be better off sticking with the FFRR, which is a shame because I really loved my D4 and always said it was LR best value car.
Seems they may have been listening and whacked the prices up. All that I Pay my Psychiatrist is the price of Feed and Hay.....and he listens to me All Day

The issue with all of this is that times have changed. When the D3 came out people were not that worried about fuel consumption or CO emissions or road tax, as a result LR could design a brick box on wheels that weighed a lot, cost a lot to run and cost a fair bit to tax. However as things have changed people expect lower tax and more to the gallon, they also expect things to be more dynamic. As a result the D5 is built to fill that requirement, hence why all cars are following the same type of design, you only need to look at BMW, Volvo or Audi where all the models are starting to look the same.
As for the D5 it may not be to peoples liking but as others have said there is nothing out there that fits the bill. I like the look of the XC90 but have seen them trying to get off a wet field with large tin tents in tow and they cannot cope where as the D4 can and I would suggest the D5 will as well. As a result I will change to a D5 as mine comes up to be changed but will also loo at the Defender in 3 years time.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

All very true, but if LR is considering environmental requirements, why is it adding in weight and complexity with daft things like electric motors for the rear seats and boot seat thingy etc?
I always thought that the RRS was aimed at the X5, Q5 and Merc market. The D5 had found a niche for a do it all car capable of meeting the needs of personal, buisiness and commercial use. It also seemed to sell well and had a very loyal following across differernt markets. I actually think LR have positioned the D5 into a market where there is significantly more competition and less differentiation.D4 HSE EU6 (Known as Jeeves)
