RRSTDV8 wrote:Seems to me you are either for Brexit or you're against. Any half way house position is simply inconsistent. And that's why I feel that those who voted to leave have shot both themselves, and the rest of us, in both feet.
If you think all those for Brexit were for the hardest of Brexits...fine. No point in a second vote eh?
Of course, it is not inconsistent for someone (me, maybe) to want us to leave the EU but want to have cordial relations with the countries of the EU.
I don't want us to have the common external tariff though, or discriminate between EU and non-EU workers or plenty of other things.
I don't want the menu complet.
That doesn't mean I don't want anything. There is no inconsistency in that.
A great many nations have arrangements with the EU, be that mutual recognition of qualifications, health standards, tariff quotas, free trade agreements, etc.
The EU is, apparently, in favour of free trade and international co-operation, without requiring everyone to join, or even pay, the EU. I don't see why that would be for everyone else and not one of the EU's biggest (if not the) trade partners.
As for having the 'whip hand', taking tariffs as an example:
If the UK and EU trade on WTO terms, tariffs paid to the UK Government by EU exporters will be c.£9bn, whereas tariffs paid to the EU by UK exporters will be c.£4bn.
Who has the 'whip hand' in that negotiation?
Of course, there doesn't need to be 'whip hand' thoughts as both the UK and (apparently) the EU are in favour of free trade.
I do think the UK government should state categorically that under a no-deal it will ensure EU exporters are fully compensated for any tariffs that might be imposed. It is entirely affordable and would, if rumours be true, just widen what it has said in private to the likes of Nissan. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

We have produced a series of briefing papers which have highlighted the many ways in which the UK’s membership of the EU has benefited patients, the health workforce and health services, as well as the risks of leaving the EU without a deal in place.
Key points
With less than eight months to go until the UK leaves the EU, there is still too much uncertainty around the implications of Brexit for patients, doctors and health services.
A ‘no deal’ Brexit could have wide ranging, and potentially damaging consequences for health services across the UK and Europe, including on workforce and immigration, Northern Ireland, access to medicines, reciprocal health care, professional qualifications and patient safety, access to medical radioisotopes, medical research and rare diseases.
Now that more is known regarding the potential impact of Brexit, the BMA is calling for the public to have a final, informed say on the Brexit deal, including the option to reject the notion of a ‘no deal’ given the serious risks such an outcome carries.
Professorpool-Rather than just dismissing the above as anti Tory Government and fear mongering, it would be interesting to read why you believe it to be wrong or inaccurate.

I'm taking another break from this thread, until at least Thursday when the technical papers come out, if that's the official line?
If my D3 has an issue or if I can help someone with one of their own I'll be on other bits of the forum.

If this isn't real life, it's not really relevant if DG has a point to make.
