Hi guys let me chime in on this as an auto electrician who deals with this on a weekly basis.

land rovers are extremely easy to steal end off story. we have countless customers with all models getting stolen. svr is the most common to get targeted and its appaling that a 100k plus car can be taken in minutes.

the obd method will work in most cases but there are gangs out there that tap into the powertrain canbus either from front bumper area
or tailgate (svr)

the best method to prevent this is an can blocking immo kit (ghost, starline etc)

for me personally the best protection would be a retractable blade that just chops the scums leg off but that would get me locked up Smile

How much of a deterrent is a good bright yellow steering lock ?

Apart from being a pain putting it on and taking off will it actually stop them taking a LR?

They are really good particularly if it is the full fit version which covers the steering wheel completely..I have seen numerous bar type versions removed by thieves who just cut the steering wheel and slide it off..

The biggest issue is having the discipline to fit it when leaving the car.

I'll second something like a Disklok - it is big and visible and hopefully enough to dissuade most thieves.

Takes a few seconds to lock or unlock and a few seconds more to stow it behind a rear seat or in the boot - worth the small hassle!

I'm using my Disklok more and more when parked in a public space. Seeing more of them being used by others at motorway service stations and the like also. Bit of a pain, but it doesn't take too long to get into a routine of using it.

I know it's not the silver bullet that will prevent theft 100%, but it's another layer of difficulty.

Talking of which, does anyone have experience with the Ampire WFS-400 can bus immobiliser device? It seems to work along the same lines as the Ghost immobiliser, but can be fitted DIY, which could save a few bob.

After my D4 got stolen I went to town on the new one.

Installed an old fashioned latching secret switch in the ignition circuit. It automatically resets when ignition turns off (I would forget to activate a manual one). I know it works because the LR dealer called my because they could not start my car. When I told them they wanted to charge me for 3 hours labour - I forgot to disable it when handing it in for a service and his Techs went looking for the “fault” 😁

As extra backup - I have also installed a GPS Tracker with the “disable” wired into one of the two accelerator pedal circuits. As soon as the two circuits disagree the car faults into a restricted mode which will stop the little Censored .

This is something that has concerned me for a while, so I moved my OBD port some time ago.

It takes me a few minutes to get to it and plug in when I need to use my GAP tool, but that's no problem.
It's obviously meant to make a thief give up sooner than they would if it's in the right place.

And as much as it really annoys me I use a Disklok on the wheel mostly as a visual deterrent.
Sorry guys, but this is to make your Disco parked nearby without one an easier target than mine.

I've had a couple of instances at a public car park I use for my Gym where I've walked away from the car and it's taken several attempts with the button to get it to lock.
I've wondered if there is somebody sat in a car with a blocking devise who have given up when they've seen I've noticed it's not locking.

Of course tracker wise the cheap option is to Ping my Altox Heater controller to see where the car is. I assume those who have them fitted know you can do that with a simple STATUS text message.

I am also going to fit a manual switch to interrupt one of the vital power circuits as has been very handily mentioned in this thread, so thanks guys.

Actually for me the loss of a car is a complete ball-ache logistics etc wise, but it is insured and can be replaced. What often can't be replaced is everything you have in it.
Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

Does anyone remember a post with either pics or video that showed a car - D4 or RRS I think - where the doors apparently unlocked after fiddling about near rear lights ?

It was a couple of years ago and I haven't found it by searching.

Wonder if that was the first of the canbus attacks ?

All vehicles have a way in thats supposed to be just for professional use when keys are lost or just missing its knowing what it is ! AA or indeed any of the secure recoverers have access to this database. It usually involves breaking some relatively inexpensive part and jumping across a couple of exposed electrical terminals.

Unfortunately this is different..
Technology is now available and sold on the open market by supposed locksmiths to all and sundry purely for their own financial gain regardless of who that person is… and unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done about it… this is the same with all the emulators out there..
the latest devices just emulate any signal you want and all the thief has to do is access the high speed can wiring… which is everywhere!
How can the car manufacturers protect against that? This is why you are seeing parts popped off..I.e reversing sensors, fog lights, or door skins and boot skins cut open.. this is now even easier when manufacturers are trying to lighten their vehicles using plastic or composite parts…

However the old manual steering lock will never make a return.. we the customers want the ease of comfort opening and keyless starts.. whether we use personal log ins or nfc’s to open our vehicles in the future there will always be a work around..
The only way to tackle this is to start locking people up for a long time… however all the specialist autocrime officers have long gone…. How does the Policeman in the street know what to look for nowadays..

So it was a win and a lose for me...

I'm really glad I moved my OBD...anyone reading this please do the same... it may save your car from theft....
That was the win... or so I thought. I'd outsmarted the scum all was good...no damage...still have the car...

Wrong!

What I didn't cater for was the loss of "peace of mind"..... pretty much ever since that night I have worried about them returning with another method or god forbid just breaking in and seeking the keys...
What's worse is the wife never recovered from the intrusion and wanted reassurance...

The only way I could do that was make sure the car is gone from temptation..... So that is the lose.
The D4 has been sold and is gone.. I miss it already.

Thanks for all the advice and thoughts all.... much appreciated.

now.....go and hide your OBD! Cool Very Happy
A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

I am really sorry you had to sell your car because of these lowlife scum who steal peoples possessions. Totally understand where you and Mrs s60r are coming from. Sad

There has been a spate of car thefts in the M28 area, Range Rovers being targeted the most it seems.

However, as they can't be driven over speed-bumps, they don't get very far. Whistle

OK, it bounced off an Audi to achieve that ... and I believe the Audi-owning family have had cars damaged 3 times by folks hitting the speed-bump then losing control.

Interesting comment that vehicles are being cut in two and just front end retained.

Also ... if intact cars are being sold on, it shows that the difficulty adding keys has been overcome, all too easily.

Happy New Year everyone.

Does anyone know which of the aftermarket immobilisers (Ghost etc... is supposed to be the best?)

For those of us who don't know where the OBD port is Embarassed how can I find out how to locate and move it?
