Austria 2008 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Manual Rimini RedDiscovery 3

Can someone knowledgable resolve my engine oil woes, please...

According to VIN, my 2008 D3 has DPF filter (and it really is there:) ).
Book states ACEA B1/B3. I asked LR, provided VIN, and the response was ACEA B1/B3.
No Ford specification neither in book nor from LR.

However here on the forum you mention FORD specification 934B for cars with DPF which in my understanding is C1 and it has bit different characteristics that B1/B3.

So who's right or am I just mistaken?

Then I'm confused why Land Rover (representative for Austria, not some local dealership) recommends B1/B3, with no Ford specification. They have my VIN and I specifically mentioned DPF. Maybe those 1st gen DPFs do not require C oils yet or LR just never updated their recommendations since they produced D3?

Well, C3 probably makes sense. It's mid-SAPS and it has the same HTHS as B3 (contrary to C1).

5/30 C1 is the correct spec.

ACEA, low ash oil is labelled as C1 (0.5% ash), C2 (0.8% ash
C3 is different again.
These are oils designed for DPF vehicles.

In short: 5/30 C1 is what you should fit, C2 if you really cannot get C1.

This should answer all queries.

A grade oils are for PETROL

B grade DIESEL

C grade DIESEL with DPF

Just wondered if motor oil has a shelf life?

For example, if I purchased today oil that was manufactured in March 2017 to use at my next service date which would be June 2019 would it still be OK?

Cheers Nick

2 years is fine.

10 years + you will notice bottle being sucked in and oil smelling.

ffs … I really can't believe I hadn't sussed that.

what I don't get is why if they can make C1 oil, they don't just switch to making ONLY C1 oil. are the other grades better lubricants but just Censored up the DPF ?

I think suppliers are thinking that. And not stocking A or B as much.

But there is the odd person on here who says, don't use C if you don't need to Neutral

So now i'm really confused or stupid! A grade is for petrol? I've been putting Castrol 5W/30 A5 in my 2007 TDV6 for a couple of years because the Castrol site says so. Have I been putting the wrong oil?

Castrol A5

You may well find that it’s rated for both A and B! So read the back of the can too. Don’t rely on the front label.
Also, you don’t have DPF, but do have a CAT I’m guessing.

Sorry for the late reply, lost notifications for some reason. All sorted now.

Pretty much all oils are approved for both petrol and diesel engines. Usually and ACEA A and B spec or ACEA A and C spec to cover both petrol and diesel in one oil.

Cheers,

Guy
