Cyprus 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 Base 7 Seat Auto Bonatti GreyDiscovery 3

Over the Christmas break i am hoping to find time to retro fit the Adaptive front lighting system (AFS) control circuitry to my D3 along with the corner lighting circuitry.

Origionally installed with Halogens, i have since fitted Xenons with AFS and corner lighting, but as yet no drive or control electronics.

And of course we have been adding diagnostic capability for AFS on all LR models on our system.

I mention this because during our research for both requirements, i have discovered aspects that are relevant to this post.

On the Disco 3, the AFS is a Denso unit costing about 120 ish GBP and which has on the Vehicle side Power and Can Bus connectivity, but on the head light side has 3 pairs of wires (two pairs are twisted) for each side to directly drive the Head lamps swivel and height motors. On the Sport and the FFRR however the Head light side is controlled over a single wire (Plus unterminated twisted wire) LIN bus connection and thus uses a different Hella Unit costing only about 30 GBP ish.

I note only today that the D4 also uses LIN bus control on its head lights and the Hella unit.

Sadly the connector For the 2 AFS units are dramatically different, otherwise one of the twisted pairs could be re employed for transporting the LIN bus Comms to the D4 headlamp. But even then you would have to use a Pre 2010 hella unit from either a sport or a FFRR and hope its position programming was OK for the D3 as the D4 unit would be programmed for a different speed CAN bus.

The corner lighting however seems very straight forward as the CJB drives that directly in both cases

Hope this helps

Sounds like the D4style lift will require a mix od D3 Xenon and D4 headlight plastic body mix...

Does your D3 currently have coil springs, air suspension and/or adaptive headlights?

Right, I'm very nearly there with this - thanks to input from BAS and BBS.

The air suspension, non-adaptive headlights (halogen or Xenon) for the D3 are the simplest that are available, from a wiring perspective anyway Wink

At the moment it looks like D3 and D4 headlights from cars with air suspension and non-adaptive lights MAY be plug-and-play compatible with each other. They certainly have the best change of being so compared to the other options.

Between D3 and D4 - the coil sprung vehicles have different levelling motor connections, and the adaptives use a different communication system to drive the levelling and rotate motors.

However, to confirm this I need some information from an air sprung, standard Xenon equipped D4 owner...... can you get to the big connector behind one of the headlights and get a clear photo of the wiring that is present please? You don't have to remove the connector to do this, as long as each wire is visible in your pic.

So can a helpful D4 owner out there help out please? Bow down Bow down
