possible idea

I have been following a few threads where some members have had their existing steering wheels professionally refurbished and re covered, often with some customisation of not only the leather type and stitching but also the Wheels thickness and shape for not a lot of money.

http://www.disco4.com/forum/topic120462.html?
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic119301.html
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic124590.html

The threads mention the providers of this service.

Given that it seems the base metal part is the same and only the upper spokes on a D4 wheel appear to be a bit shorter to accomodate the wider switch packs than a D3, I wonder if they would also be able to trim back the padding of the upper spokes of a D3 wheel before re covering in order to allow the D4 switch packs to fit.

Quite a bargain. Just got to wait for the interface cards to appear.

Couldn't wait.

Interface cards arrived today. I thought I'd be sensible and wait until the weekend before fitting them. Of course that didn't happen. Only took me about an hour from start to finish.

Looks good!

Nice one Nubber Thumbs Up

To give everyone a heads up, we have recently confirmed that from VIN EA000001 (14MY) Land Rover has changed the Heated Steering Wheel control ECU they are fitting into their steering wheels to what appears to be the same one they are fitting to the Freelander 2 and all of their later Vehicle models.

Here is a picture of the previous ECU (Top) and the Later one (Bottom)

The later version has an additional 3 pin socket that connects into a Plug on a modified version of the Y split loom.

In working closely with a member here especially who has been assisting us, we have identified that one of these 3 connections is to connect the new type Heated Steering Wheel ECU to the BCU with a data connection that is simply not present on a Discovery 3 and is required to make this ECU work.

We are of course looking into the possibility of finding a solution to this, but in the meantime please be advised that if retro fitting a heated wheel with our conversion Kit, that if you have this later Heated wheel ECU, the heated wheel will not work.

Colin

It is nice to see that you are finally alerting people about this issue!

I brought this issue to your attention in 08/11/2014 when I tried to install the heated S/W.

At the end I developed my own module with a 555 timer set to 2 minutes triggered by the steering wheel switch.

It would be nice to fix it properly one day!!!

So I have fitted a heated steering wheel to my RRS. I have put in a clockspring (heated) and as you can see from the photo I have attached I need to supply power to the heated wheel.

Does anyone know where I can get that 2 prong (2 wire) connector that is circled in the pic?

Now any good ideas on where to patch into for power to the heated wheel?

I used the cigarette lighter. It was pretty easy running the wire from the wheel down behind the console. Thumbs Up

Yep, same as mine, it's been on about a year now is working perfect and still is the best mod I've done Thumbs Up
Check that is has got the small PCB for the heated part included, it is situated under the right side switch bank and cannot be obtained separately, it only comes with the wheel. The wiring loom from the small PCB should be able to plug directly into the clock spring heated socket inside the wheel.
Look at BBS Spy's reply and photo to Nubber above, it's that bit Thumbs Up
When fitting the conversion kit PCB's from BBS take extra care not to over tighten them?
