The FINAL, EXCITING INSTALLMENT, as promised...
GOOD NEWS for all those with the latest nav dvd (YIW500200) - we just need to wait a few weeks...
I have just got off the phone with my source at Denso Corp: as recently as yesterday(!), LR reached an agreement with Denso which sees the former releasing a new service bulletin to all LR dealers. This will contain the software needed to upgrade the CAR CONFIG File in pre-MY07 cars. For the benefit of those of us with a less-than-Bill-Gates grasp of such matters, this is the file in the car's electronic brain that all factory-fitted electronic modules & controllers (sat nav included) look to in order to identify the exact model of car they have been installed in, and in which geographical market they are to be used; both of these factors then determine the performance/behaviour of each module. This is important for LR as, for example, sat nav input whilst on the move is apparently illegal in certain countries - although of course not in the UK.
Anyway, this forthcoming service bulletin is designed to recognise the installation of the latest map (YIW500200) in MY06 and earlier cars, & then release the "lock" currently preventing on-the-move input that is built into the sat nav module. (This lock, as we know, has been removed from MY07 cars). Astonishingly, neither Denso nor, more importantly, LR themselves seemed to realise that those of us with MY05 and MY06 cars might at some point want to (a) upgrade our maps to the latest version, and (b) be able to input WHILST ON THE MOVE!!! You might like to think that this is all a result of my digging around, but I am, of course, far too modest to claim that .
This leaves only 2 questions:
firstly, WHEN the service bulletin will be released to dealers. Answer from Denso: "within the next month - LR have agreed to this - otherwise loads of people will start calling & asking the same questions you have".
Secondly, whether this update will also enable on-the-move input for those who have not upgraded & are sticking with their earlier maps (parts code ending in "12" or "13", I think). Answer: nobody seems to know!
And finally... you might like to know that the biggest changes/improvements to the map data for the new YIW500200 disc cover Ireland, Spain and Italy. Apparently, they were all poorly sat-nav mapped and therefore pretty hopless to find your way around... until now.
To summarise, from about December onwards, anyone with the latest disc should ask their dealer to update their car config file, as per the latest sat nav service bulletin.
I hope this is of help to all.... DGRR

I would think so... the service bulletin will be out before you've got that much further
Remember, it's supposed to be a permanent fix, too... no more I AGREE followed by touch screen for 5 seconds/1791 nonsense. Just good ol' I AGREE & that's it. DGRR

I wonder if the dealers will check the DVD in the player under the seat to see what version it is? I wonder what will be said if a copy DVD is found? Matt

Given the labour rates charged, i should hope they have better things to do! But even if they do check, so what? I often burn copies of cds & dvds, & then just use the copy - with small children & their inquisitive (& equally sticky) fingers about the place, I learnt long ago that this is far cheaper than continually replacing the originals. And, of course, it's completely legal. Your LR dealer is hardly likely to alienate you by demanding to see your original LR dealer-purchased disc before they agree to carry out the config file upgrade... with that sort of attitude, you will simply take your business elsewhere. And rightly so! DGRR
