Cheers, was it much hassle to run the wires back there? Did you go via the roof or floor?

Went via floor, going this route kept the wires away from the air bags! I found it easy to route them this way too.

thanks for all the info guys!!!
Just ordered a surround from local dealer. Also ordered a mini usb extension cable from Amazon.
Just wondering if anyone knows how to remove the surround from the Garmin (1490T) as I like bullheads flush fit...?
I think I will then take the car to a local car hifi man and get him to get a power feed to the unit (maybe using the usb extension to go into the glove compartment with a connection for the power into a standard cigar socket connection (thus meaning I can dismantle etc) and with the traffic ariel popping up behind the dash and squeezed up the A pillar (?) plastic.
I might also use some sikaflex to get a 'seal' between D4 surround and the sat nav screen....

What you plan seems good, if I still had it my next step would have been to seal it up as you describe. Is the homemade method of powering that I suggested no good for you - the garmin units are self switching when the power is cut from the ignition of course? Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
"What is the first rule when overlanding?"

Cheers - I think we are talking the same solution ie take the power from the existing fag lighter socket on the left of gear stick. Take that power into glove box, from there connect the garmin...?

I have the 1490TV and if you want to take the front trim off just get your nail under trim as as you move around the trim just un clips as you go
The Garmin shuts down after 20 odd seconds after you turn the ignition off aslong as you are wiring it into the back of the cigar lighter

Cheers I'll have a look tomorrow ie might just splice into wires behind the cigar lighter and see if that is ok, just not sure about the traffic connector having the right position.
Don't have a dremmel thing so will be hacksaw only...

Apologies, yes we were talking about the same thing - I read it incorrectly mate Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:

Collected the d4 surround from local dealer (£12). Bought a double extension for cigar lighter. Just need USB extension cable to arrive! Then I will pull H panel forward (?) and see if i can spur from cigar to glove box. Then I'll start cutting down the surround.
Any more hints, tips and facts/experiences...?! Ta.

Yep grab the H panel at the bottom and give a tug forward.
If you remove the top glove box you can route the traffic aerial this way so it ends up coming out the end of the dash and secure to the windscreen so its just showing , info came from lad , always seem to pick up traffic info

Thanks - will give it a tug later!
Just managed to get the Garmin face surround off. Pretty easy - I happened to have some of the iphone screen removing tools which helped but I guess a guitar pick would probably suffice.
When I went to the local dealer (Chesterfield) they were aware of this mod and he said others locally had been doing it.
