Great job Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
"What is the first rule when overlanding?"
I would Reply:
"Duratrac"

Thanks guys for the advice etc
As I don't have a dremmel I just used a large hacksaw with a fine blade. Meant I could get pretty good clean and straight lines/cuts. So I ended up keeping much of the bottom of the surround and keeping the rubber mat in situ. I quite like the look...

Reading through these posts as looking at doing this ,does the garmin model power up and off just with a 12v conection ? im presuming its switched on then ignition does rest without need for another wire to power on-off excuse numptyness just trying to get my head round the wiring and the on off of the nav, what model of garmin fits? and is of the better spec??

All the info is above... Garmin units power on and off with ignition hence the use of the cigar lighter feed.
You need a 5 inch screen eg garmin 1490.

Guys - how did you get the power connected...? I pulled off the H panel and then started to unscrew the cigar lighter panel and also the heater panel above before I ran outta time. Was I heading in the right direction?

Darryl ,
Think a lot of us have fitted the Garmin 1490TV
Wire it into an ignition live and no need to worry about powering on/off , when you switch the ignition off it gives you the option to stay powered on , if you ignore this message then the unit will switch off anyway after 20 odd seconds.
If you choose to keep it running whilst ignition off (position 1) then the unit will run on its own battery
gazzab ,
Just get yourself a ciggy lighter from Maplins (couple of quid) and run a live and earth down to the back of the D3 ciggy lighter , this way you can plug in the sat nav without chopping the plug off the end and it hides all wiring behind the H trim

Thanks. Don't I need to remove the cigar lighter panel so as to get to the wires or is it just the h panel?

Remove the H trim , then hvac panel and loosen ashtray / cigar panel just enough to get to the back of the cigar lighter. You can then push the cigar lighter out enough to solder on the wires

For those members asking about tom tom fitting.....
I have the large screen tomtom xxl which would be perfect for the D4 housing... Just one problem though, tomtoms have their on/ off switch at the top, so therefore you cant turn it on once mounted behind the housing.
Cant see an easy fix to this problem. iMHO the tomtom units are far superior to the others out there, having used most models over the past 10 years. If anyone has a fix do let me know as i think the D4 housing looks fab....................................................................................................
If my wife ever sells my stuff for what she thinks I paid for them, you lot are gonna get some bargains!
